PIONEER MOTHER AT REST.
Mrs. B. T. Barfoot Passed Away Tuesday Morning After Long Illness.
At six o’clock Tuesday morning after more than a year’s illness from the infirmities of old age, Mrs. B. T. Barfoot passed into final rest. The end came in peaceful sleep after several weeks of suffering.
In the death of Mrs. Barfoot another link which binds pioneer days to the present was broken. Coming to Decorah with her husband at a time when it was but a village, she found joy in her husband’s daily labor as a builder of some of its public buildings and homes. Then when the call of the land took them out to a farm in Madison township she helped him to tame the prairie and to make it blossom as the rose. It was hard work but she found pleasure in it, and when the reward of honest labor and thrift made it possible for them to retire she came back with her husband to Decorah to enjoy a serene and peaceful old age, ministered to most tenderly by her daughters.
Jane Doherty was born in February, 1829, in Holmes county, Ohio. Left an orphan at the tender age of three weeks, she was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Frye. She was married to Benjamin Barfoot on April 26, 1850, and in 1853 they moved to Freeport, Ill., where they resided until October, 1855, when they came to Decorah. They lived in the city until 1868, when they moved onto land in Madison township that had been purchased in 1861, And there they continued to live until sixteen years ago when they returned to Decorah, having previously purchased the residence at the corner of River and Pearl streets.
Their union was blessed by seven children, one daughter dying in infancy. The living children are Andrew of Salina, Kas., Enos of Cresco, Louise, Nettie, Scott and Albert of Decorah. Mrs. Barfoot was a member of the Congregational church of Decorah, her connection dating back to the time when Rev. E. Adams was pastor, and whenever it was possible, until age kept her more closely confined at home, she was regular in her attendance. Her thought was centered in her home and about her husband and children, and in their tribute as they lay her remains away to-day they are joined by many friends who had known the kindness of heart that she had shown to them.
The funeral will be held at the house at two o’clock, Rev. M. Willett, officiating, and interment will be made at Phelps cemetery.Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows her birth date as Feb. 27, 1828 which does not agree with the above. She died March 12, 1912. It also shows her maiden name spelled Dougherty.
