Brown, Charles R. 1892 - 1974

Charles R. Brown of Harpers Ferry and former Castalia businessman died Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Waukon of a lingering illness. He was 81.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. E.O. Baalson Friday, Jan. 25 at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia. Pallbearers were Mr. Brown's grandsons, Larry and David Svendsen, Jerry, Terry and Gary Brown of Castalia and Dana and Michael Grant of Faribault, Minn. Mrs. Bernald Martins was organist and Ronald Meyer was soloist.
A native of Arcadia, Neb., Mr. Brown was born September 6, 1892, the son of Rufus and Mary Vaughn Brown. The family moved to the Waterville area in 1900.
He was married June 29, 1927 to the former Orpha O. Thias, and the couple farmed near the Waterville-Monona area until 1937 when they moved to Castalia where Mr. Brown was in business. In 1951 they moved to a farm near Waukon and retired in 1970 when they moved to Harpers Ferry.
Mr. Brown was a member of the VFW in Postville and a member of the Harpers Ferry Senior Citizens. He was also a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Mary) Svendsen, Castalia and Mrs. Charles (Kay) Grant of Faribault, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four brothers, William and Darwin Brown of Waterville, Wray of Davenport and Bruce of Blencoe, Ia.; a sister, Mrs. Jerry (Agnes) Hawkins, Waterville and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Brown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles William; a brother, Roy and two sisters, Mrs. Harmey (Ethel) Russell and Mrs. Frank (Rilla) Mielke.
