LaDue Ode, 27, Drowns Sunday at Harpers Ferry

A rural Decorah man was the victim of a drowning accident at the Mississippi River at Harpers Ferry Sunday.
LaDue Wayne Ode, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Ode of Springfield Township, was with friends at the River Sunday when he slipped from a dock and fell into the water which was between 8 to 15 feet deep, according to the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department which received the call at 1:50 p.m. The Harpers Ferry Rescue Squad was called and recovered the body at 2:40 Sunday afternoon.
Funeral services for Mr. Ode are being conducted this afternoon (Tuesday) at 2 o'clock at Washington Prairie Church where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery with the Rev. Arndt Braaten conducting final rites. Pallbearers are Dennis Wepler, Richard Hertges, Wayne Ode, David Tveter, Thomas Jacobson and David Hegg. Miss Karen Ode will play the flute accompanied at the organ by Paul Bruvold. Arrangements are being made by Steine Funeral Home.
A life-long resident of Winneshiek County, Mr. Ode had been employed at Ode's Skelly Service in Decorah and more recently was farming with his father. He served five and one-half years with the United States Marine with most of his tour of duty overseas in Vietnam.
He was a member of the VFW, the Elks and the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Besides his parents, Mr. Ode is survived by three sisters, Joyce and Karen Ode at home and Judith (Mrs. William Boiler) of Arlington, Va. and an uncle, Les Ode of Decorah.
LaDue Wayne Ode was born October 31, 1946 and was a graduate of Decorah High School with the class of 1964.
