Immanuel Weiss was born July 18, 1916 in Kulm, Romania, the son of Daniel and Anna Marie (Mock) Weiss. He served in the Romanian army and was wounded during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Johanna Klara Henke on August 14, 1938 in Kulm, Romania. To this union, seven children were born: Cheri, Hilma, Gerda, Erich, Siegfried, Gerlyn, and Arnold. Immanuel and Johanna would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on August 14, 2006.

Immanuel and Johanna immigrated to the United States on April 29, 1952 and made their home in Humboldt County and later Palo Alto County in northwest Iowa. The couple purchased their farm on December 2, 1960 in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County where they moved and farmed together for many years. Immanuel retired from farming in 1981. He celebrated his 90th birthday on July 18, 2006 as pictured above.

He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust, serving several terms on the Church Council and was a long time member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

Immanuel loved farming and his heart was always in the land. Even though he was retired, he was still very involved in the day to day operation of the family farm. It was not unusual to see him drive up in his little red pickup to check on work being done in the fields. He also enjoyed woodworking and fishing in the Mississippi River.
He was a great story teller and enjoyed sharing his coon and chicken stories. Immanuel enjoyed writing letters and even wrote a book entitled "Bessarabian Knight" published in 1991. The book chronicles his life from his earliest memory, through World War II, immigration to the United States and farming in Iowa. Family was very important to Immanuel and his presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Immanuel died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at his home at the age of 90 years.

Survivors include his wife, Johanna of Decorah; six children, Cheri (Fred) Dearborn of Lawrenceburg, IN., Hilma (Gary) Sanders of Broken Arrow, OK, Gerda (Roy) Luhman of Graettinger, IA, Erich (Mary) Weiss of Decorah, IA, Gerlyn (John) of Peru, IL and Arnold (Julie) Weiss of Decorah, IA; fifteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Immanuel was preceded in death by a son, Siegfried on December 7, 1996; his parents; two brothers, Teophil and Wilhelm and three sisters, Eliza, Ann Maria and Elsa.
