Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa

A burglar named Williams; confined in the Ottumwa jail shot and killed the turnkey John Manning about 11 o'clock a.m and escaped. He also dislodged his revolver; which had somehow been furbished him from outside of the jail at a lady who saw him attempt to escape but fortunately missed his aim. Hundreds of citizens are scouring the county in search of the desperaldro and if he is found; he will certainly be lynched.
