Esther Stark McComb

Esther McComb, 83, rural Bonaparte, Iowa died at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, 1989 at the Van Buren Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, Iowa.

She was born July 26, 1905, near Traer, Iowa, the daughter of Frank M. Stark and Margaret Maxwell Stark. She was a graduate of Traer High School, a 1924 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, a graduate in 1939 of the University of Iowa, and, in 1945, she graduated from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, receiving a master of arts degree in American history.

Her 41-year public school teaching career included a one-room country school near Traer, and, in southeast Iowa, she taught at Morning Sun, Mediapolis, Mt. Pleasant and Burlington. Afterward, she taught for eight years at Hickman High School, Columbia, Mo.; the, for 12 years in the Shawnee-Mission School System in the greater Kansas City area.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant Iowa, a member of Chapter AB, PEO, and was past matron of both Boone Chapter 290, Order of Easter Star, Columbia, Missouri, and Magnolia Chapter, 276, Order of Eastern Star, Bonaparte, Iowa.

On June 12, 1947 she married Harold Craig McComb at Traer, Iowa. She is survived by her husband, a sister, Mrs. Paul (Eleanor) Schelp of Howell, Michigan, two step-sons, John H. McComb, Indianapolis, Ind. and Craig E. McComb, Madison, Wisc., a stepdaughter, Mrs. William (Marilyn J.) Watson, Hillsboro, Iowa, five step-granddaughters Mary Watson Arroyo, Jennifer McComb, Terrie McComb, Nancy Watson and Lisa McComb, one step-grandson, Thomas McComb, and other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Robert and Kenneth, and three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Early, Mrs. Thomas (Dorothy) McEwen and Mrs. David (Margaret) Keith.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 10, 1989 at 1 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant, the Rev. Larry Mitchell, pastor of the church officiating. Interment was in Vale Cemetery, north of Bonaparte.

Casket bearers were Richard Eden, James Green, Maurice Huff, Norval Mosher, Allan D. Shook, Donald Stark and W. Bush Walden. Interment was in the Vale Cemetery, north of Bonaparte.
