Emma E. Topping

Emma E. Topping, 95, Rt. 1, Stockport, died Friday, April 22, 1988, at the Jefferson County Hospital Longterm Care Unit. She had been in failing health for some time.

Emma was born January 16, 1893, near Lockridge, to Swedish immigrant parents, Charles and Anna Carlson Nelson.

Most of her early life was spent in the Birmingham Community, where she graduated from Birmingham High School. She worked as a clerk in Corry's Store for several years before she married Clem Topping of Birmingham, August 12, 1924, at Chariton. They moved to Stockport in 1929. She has lived her entire life in Jefferson and Van Buren Counties.

Emma was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Birmingham American Legion Auxiliary, a past active member of the Van Buren Historical Society.

She was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by her husband Clem, two daughters Dorothy Bell of Fairfield, and Charlotte Olsen of Babylon, Long Island, New York; Eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 25, at the Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham, with the Rev. Charles McCracken officiating.

Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham.

Memorials have been established to the Birmingham Presbyterian Church or to the Stockport Public Library.

The Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham are in charge of arrangements.
