Robert Canaday rites at De Witt

DE WITT - Robert L. Canaday, 63, De Witt, formerly of Birmingham, died Sunday at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in De Witt with the Rev. Joseph Denning officiating. Burial with military rites will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. and a masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Schultz-McGinnis Funeral Home in De Witt.

Canaday was born Aug. 14, 1924 in Birmingham, the son of Elmer and Edna Jackson Canaday, and was raised and educated in the Birmingham community. He married Shirley Moore in 1946. On Feb. 2, 1968 at De Witt, he married Lois Green Bickel.

Also surviving are a daughter, Susan Canaday of De Witt; a son, Robert Craig of Clinton; two stepdaughters, Lynne Bickel of Kansas City, Mo., Gayle McGillicuddy of Iowa City; two stepsons, Scott Bickel of De Witt, Donald Bickel of Rockfort, Ill.; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a sister, Karen Streed of Marshalltown; three brothers, Earl of Birmingham, John of Boulder, Colo., and Dean of Holt, Mo. His parents, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Canaday had been a state trooper with the Iowa Highway Patrol in eastern Iowa, an Allis-Chalmers territory block man for Iowa, and served as De Witt police chief from 1968 t0 1980, when he retired. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving as radio operator.

He was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge, both of De Witt, the Davenport Kaaba Shrine, Quad-City Council of Police Chiefs, U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, and served (1965-?6) on the (Uni???.......)
