Marjorie Payne

Miss Marjorie Payne, 84, of Memphis, Missouri, died at her home at 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday, February 29, 1984. She was born in Memphis on March 16, 1899, the daughter of Dexter Willims and Carrie Reckard Payne.

Miss Payne was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Edith and two in infancy, two brothers, Philip and Neal, and one niece, Carolanne Payne.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Jeannette Payne and Frances Payne of Memphis, three nephews, Robert D. Payne, Denver, Colorado, Philip E. Payne and Richard N. Payne, both of Memphis and one niece, Joanne Storm of Evanston, Illinois.

Marjorie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter C. She was a registered nurse and received her nurse's training at the Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Marjorie also obtained a degree in Medical Technology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Upon completion of her nurses training she worked in the Chicago area for several years. In the last week of December 1939, Marjorie went to work for Dr. E.E. Gilfillan, M.D. as his private nurse in his office in Memphis. She continued as Dr. Gilfillan's nurse at the Gilfillan Clinic in Bloomfield when it began operation in 1946. She continued to live in Memphis and commuted to Bloomfield until her retirement on June 6, 1966.

Funeral services were conducted by Payne-Gerth, Friday, March 2, 1984, at 10 a.m. from their Memphis Chapel with the Rev. Clifford Horton officiating. The organist was Nancy Harris. Pallbearers were John E. Luther, Herb Prather, William H. Adams, Dwight DeRosear, Sam Berendzen, and Harlo L. Donelson, D.D.S. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery.
