Ostergaard dies April 19 in California

Hjalmar Ostergaard, superintendent of the Bloomfield schools from 1920 until 1942, died April 19 in Arcadia Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, Calif. He was born in Denmark on Aug. 25, 1887.

The funeral was held April 21 and interment was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.

He was school superintendent at Mystic from 1914 to 1918 and served as an infantry lieutenant in France and in the occupation of Germany at Coblenz.

He was superintendent of schools at Mount Vernon from 1942 to 1944 when he moved to southern California. For 10 years, he taught in the Excelsior High School.

Following retirement, he and his wife Pearl, spent nine years at Leisure World Retirement Center in Seal Beach, but was a resident of Arcadia at the time of death.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, the Rotary Club and the California Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include his widow, Pearl, who resides at 1613 Sixth Ave., Arcadia, Calif.; and his daughter, Mrs. Helen Schrader; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers.
