OBITUARY

LULA HYLAND

A committal service was held Tuesday, Dec. 19 at Cedar Memorial Mausoleum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for Lula D. Cavalier Hyland, 85, of Houston, Texas and formerly of Traer. She died Sunday, Dec. 17 [1989] at the home of her daughter Paula Ambrosy in Houston.

Lula was born Oct. 30, 1904, the daughter of Oren and Anna (Bannon) Finch of rural Traer. She was educated in Traer, graduating in 1922.

On July 31, 1923, she was married to George Cavalier, and the couple built a successful business, with she taking an active partnership in the automobile dealership. Her husband, George, died in a car accident in August of 1953, and Cavalier Motor Company was sold in 1954.

Lula continued to be an active businesswoman, completing tax returns for various people in her home.

Lula later married Don Hyland of Traer. He died July 15, 1958.

Always an active contributing member of the Traer community, Lula was a longtime member of the Traer United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also an active member of the Kubik-Finch Unit of the
American Legion Auxiliary, holding many of the offices in that organization; was a member of the Bona Dea Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star; was a 50-year active member of Alpha Club; was a member and past president of Iowana Club; spent over 25 years on the county board of the American Cancer Society; was a member of the Traer Historical Society, and served many years on the board of the Sunrise Hill Care Center.

Lula was preceded in death by her husbands, George Cavalier and Don Hyland; and by a son, George Cavalier Jr, who died Dec. 24, 1986, and by her brothers, Elmer, Oren, Don and Merle Finch.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Jim (Paula) Ambrosy, 301 Wilcrest #2701, Houston, Texas 77042; two grandchildren in Houston and two in Atlantic City, NJ; and two brothers, Kenneth Finch of Escondido, CA and Ralph Finch of Santa Cruz, CA.
