Alfred "Earl" Pearson, 85, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Alex T. Washington officiating.

A. Earl Pearson was born July 20, 1919, in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of John Servatius and Grace Charlotte (Honeywell) Pearson. He was raised in Hawarden and graduated from Hawarden High School.

He was united in marriage to Doris Ann Rogers on Sept. 15, 1940, in Wayne, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army for three and one half years during World War II, with 18 months on Guadalcanal in the South Pacific.

He began his 42-year-long career with J.C. Penney's Company while attending high school in 1936. His lengthy career took him to most of the 50 states. He spent the last 19 years of his time in California as advertising manager of the 10 western states before retiring in 1979. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1999, from their former residence in Mission Viejo, Calif. He was a personal acquaintance of Mr. Penney and found him an inspiration.

He served as president of the H.C.S.C. Club, an association of retired Penney managers for southern California. He was president of the Golden Years Club from 1993 to 1994, in Morningside.

He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an accomplished artist, many of his paintings receiving awards. In addition, he was an organist, golfer and card player.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Ann Pearson of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Earlene and William Davis of Johnston, Iowa, and Victoria Lynn Pearson-Laymance and Dr. Brett Laymance of Ojai, Calif.; four grandchildren, Reed Davis of Los Angeles, Calif., Julie and Lance Hood of Altoona, Iowa, Trevor Laymance and Marshall Laymance, both of Ojai, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Hood and Mya Hood, both of Altoona, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers.

Memorials may be directed in care of the family.
