Harold C. Ahlers, age 91, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Sibley Specialty Care in Sibley, Iowa. His funeral Service will at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon with Msgr. Kenneth Seifried and Father Tim Hogan Officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Patrick Cemetery with full Military Honors Presented By: McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 of the Sheldon American Legion.
Visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 – 10:45 A.M. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary prayed at 9:00 A.M.
Arrangements are under the care of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Harold Charles Ahlers, the son of Raymond T. and Rose (Auchstetter) Ahlers, was born on October 7, 1932, in Granville, Iowa. He attended Spalding Catholic School in Granville graduating in 1950. After graduating from high school, Harold held several jobs before starting work for C.I. Hersom Construction of Laurens, Iowa in 1951. They sent him to Sheldon to work on building the Christian Reformed Church; while eating his meals at Ray’s Bowl and Café, he liked the waitress, Coleen and asked her for a date. Harold enlisted into the United States Army on December 10, 1953, serving in South Korea, the Philippines and Guam as a SPC 3rd Class for 18 months and 8 days, serving as a heavy vehicle driver and an MP. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; the UN Service Medal; Korean Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; He was a pitcher for the Army baseball team and wrote sports articles for the Army paper. Returning home after the service, Harold started Harold’s 66 Service in Sheldon on January 1, 1956 and 23 days later he was united in marriage to Coleen Wolbers on January 23, 1956 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon, Iowa. Harold owned and operated Harold’s 66 Service in Sheldon from January 1, 1956 until July 1990, he also drove a school bus for 18 years. Harold passed away on August 27, 2024 at the Sibley Specialty Care in Sibley, Iowa reaching the age of 91 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Harold was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon, a life-time member of the Sheldon Knights of Columbus #1536, and the McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 of the Sheldon American Legion, he was also a member the Sheldon Eagles Club and enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Sanborn Golf and Country Club. Harold and Coleen enjoyed wintering in Arizona and Texas for 15 years, making many new friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Coleen of Sheldon and their children, Ron (Cindy) Ahlers of Spencer, IA; Janet (Ken) Seivert of Sheldon, IA; Tom (Linda) Ahlers of Sioux Falls, SD; Jacqueline Ahlers of Minneapolis, MN; Roger (Julie) Ahlers of Hastings, NE; Mike (Paula) Ahlers of Sheldon, IA and Sherise Ahlers of Urbandale, IA; 11 grandchildren, 5½ great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, a sister, Joann Geurink of Alton, IA; 4 sisters-in-law, Nancy Ahlers of Aurora, CO; Inez Ahlers of Hemet, CA; Marlene (Lowell “Spike”) Gross of Fremont, NE and Margaret Morse of Treasure Island, FL; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond T. and Rose Ahlers; his in-laws, Carl and Hedwig Wolbers; 3 brothers, Leonard Ahlers, Dennis (Connie) Ahlers and Norbert (Lois) Ahlers; 2 brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Marge) Wolbers and George (Delores) Wolbers and a sister-in-law, Lois Hewitt.
