From the Alton Democrat, November 1, 1940, Boyden news:

Mrs. G. P. Kooiman, nee Carrie Ten Cate, was born on March 20, 1890, and passed away at the home of her brother, Herman Ten Cate, at Edgerton, Minn., Sunday night, Oct. 20, 1940, at the age of fifty and one-half years. On March 20, 1908, she was united in marriage to Mr. Kooiman at Leota, Minn. To this union was born three children, all of whom are living. About 17 years ago they moved to Boyden where Mr. Kooiman was engaged in running a barber shop and was still in the business at the time of his wife’s death. Mrs. Kooiman was engaged in Beauty Culture which she gave up only a short time before her death.

Those who survive are her husband, G. P. Kooiman of Boyden; two sons, Peter and Claire, and one daughter, Edna, Mrs. Allan Youngsma, all of Redlands, Calif.; her mother, Mrs. Julia Ten Cate, one brother, Herman, three sisters, Emma, Mrs. John Huiskens, Annie, Mrs. Frank Roetman, all of Edgerton, Minn., and Johanna of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 23, at the Christian Reformed church at Edgerton with Rev. Eilers of Edgerton and Rev. J. W. Brink of Boyden officiating. Interment was in the Edgerton cemetery.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Gerrit P. Kooiman at the Christian Reformed church in Edgerton, Minnesota, on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Kooiman died at the Herman TenCate home at 11:00 o’clock Sunday night. A large number of friends and relatives from Boyden and its entire vicinity attended the last rites of the beloved mother. A complete obituary will be published next week.

Her death certificate 1940-MN-012135 (informant W. Kooiman, Edgerton) has Carrie Kooiman, wife of Gerrit P. Kooiman; born March 20, 1890 in Iowa; parents James Ten Cate, born in the Netherlands, and Julia De Boer, born in Illinois; died in Edgerton at 11:25 p.m. October 20, 1940; cause, malignant hypertension, particularly diastolic, duration 5 years or more.

Her FindaGrave.com page adds her burial place, Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton, and a photo of her headstone. Parents James Ten Cate (1865-1927) and Julia Florentina De Boer Ten Cate. Four siblings listed. Husband Gerrit Peter Kooiman (1884-1958). Two children listed: Peter James Kooiman (1909-1962) and Julia Edna Kooiman Youngsma (1917-2003).

In the 1920 census Gerrit (age 35), Carrie (29), and children Peter (10) and Julia (2) are farming in Leota. The 1925 Iowa state census shows the family in Boyden: Gerrit P. (40), Carrie (34), children Peter J. (15), Edna (7), and Clare (3), all born in Minnesota. In 1930 and 1940 the family (1930) and Gerrit and Carrie (1940) are still in Boyden, where he is a barber with his own shop.
