From the Sioux County Capital, March 6, 1969:

Word has been received of the accidental death of the married son of Mr. and Mrs. George Muilenburg, former residents of Orange City, now living at La Jolla, Calif. Mr. Muilenburg was a teacher at La Jolla, Calif.

The California Death Index has Adlai J. Muilenburg, born 11 Feb 1920, died 26 Feb 1969 in San Diego County, mother’s maiden name Ypma.

His FindaGrave.com adds his full name, Adlai Joel Muilenburg; burial place, El Camino Memorial Park, San Diego; spouse Mary E. Muilenburg (1918-1992); one son, Mark George Muilenburg (1946-1946); and a photo of his headstone.

The Iowa Births and Christenings Index on Ancestry.com has Adlai Joel Muilenburg, born 11 Feb 1920 in Holland Township, Sioux County, Iowa; parents George Albert Muilenburg and Florence Hypma[i.e., Ypma].

The 1925 Iowa state census shows George and Florence Muilenburg farming in Holland Township, Sioux County, with their three children, including Adlai J. (age 5). By 1930 they were farming in Dewey County, South Dakota, with children Ruth (12), Adlai Joel (10) and Anita (7). They moved back to the Sioux Center area in 1935 (Alton Democrat, May 31, 1935), and the following year moved to La Jolla (Alton Democrat, April 10, 1936). In the 1940 census they were living in San Diego, California with Adlai (now identified as a daughter, age 20), and Anetta (17); Adlai is attending college. He appears in the 1953 and 1965 online La Jolla city directories as a teacher in the La Jolla High School, with wife Mary E.

His World War II draft registration card describes him (age 21) as a student at San Diego State College; height 5’ 10-1/2”, weight 155, hazel eyes, blonde hair, light complexion.
