From the Santa Maria Times (Santa Maria, California), August 30, 1976:

A funeral for George A. Muilenburg, 85, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Greenwood Mortuary, San Diego. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Muilenburg , born May 29, 1890 in Orange City, Iowa, died Sunday in a Santa Maria hospital. An Orcutt resident for six years, he was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his widow, Henrietta Muilenburg, Orcutt; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth M. Phillips, Koshkonong, Mo., and Mrs. Gertrude A. Marden, Duluth, Minn.; a brother, Henry Muilenburg, Sheldon, Iowa; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary Muilenburg, La Jolla; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Adlai Joel Muilenburg, who died Feb. 26, 1969.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary.

The California Death Index has George A. Muilenburg, born 29 May 1891 in Iowa, died 29 Aug 1976 in Santa Barbara.

Sioux County records show George A. and his family with his first wife:

The Sioux County marriage register for 1916/1917 has groom George A. Muilenburg, age 26, resident of Orange City, a farmer, born in Orange City, parents A. W. Muilenburg and Anna Dykstra; bride Juliana Florentina Catherina Ypma, age 25, resident of Orange City, born in Orange City, parents Job Ypma and Gertie Nieuwenhof; married in Orange City August 30, 1916.

In the 1920 census they and daughter Ruth (2-4/12) were farming in Holland Township, Sioux County. By 1925 they had two more children, son Adlai J. and daughter Gertrude A. By 1930 they were farming in Dewey County, South Dakota, with children Ruth (12), Adlai Joel (10) and Anita (7). They moved back to the Sioux Center area in 1935 (Alton Democrat, May 31, 1935), and the following year moved to La Jolla (Alton Democrat, April 10, 1936).

In the 1940 census they were living in San Diego, California with Adlai (now identified as a daughter, age 20), and Anetta (17); George is a church sexton and Florence is a nurse in a private home. They also appear in the 1940 La Jolla city directory. Florence died September 6, 1940 (see her obituary, posted separately). In the 1948 San Diego city directory he is a yardman for the La Jolla Lumber Company; wife Henrietta.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) shows him age 26, married, farming at Orange City, described as tall, stout, blue eyes, brown hair. His World War II draft registration card (April 1942) shows him, age 50, living in La Jolla, employed by the First Presbyterian Church; closest contact Adlai Joel Muilenburg; height 6 feet, weight 185, blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion.
