Husband of Former Alton Girl Dies

Miner Co. (S.D.) Pioneer –
George Edward Adler passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10th, at the St. Joseph’s hospital in Mitchell. He had been in poor health for more than a year and on March 22 underwent a serious operation from which he never recovered. He was born Sept. 2, 1890 at LeMars, Iowa, son of the late Chris and Anna Adler. His mother died Sept. 10, 1940.

On November 30, 1916, he was married to Miss Clara Schnee of Alton, Ia. They resided at LeMars, Ia., until 1920, when they moved to Howard, which has been their home ever since. This union was blessed with six children: Lorraine of Glendale, Calif., Leland, Ethel, Audrey, Donald and Gloria, all at home. He is survived by his wife and children; also four brothers and one sister.

George Adler was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and a true friend. He was well known and admired by the people of this and adjoining communities. Last spring he filed for the first time for a political office, that of state representative of Miner county and was nominated. He looked forward to having an opportunity of serving his countrymen in the state legislature.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Veeser at St. Agatha’s Catholic church in Howard last Saturday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. and interment was made in St. Joseph’s cemetery. Funeral arrangements were conducted by the Thompson funeral service. Pallbearers were Theodore Bode, Amos Klein, George Kolbach, John Lampert, John Noonan and Gilbert Thelen.

Gansemer, daughter Mary Ann and Mrs. Carl Wolbers, Sheldon, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Vonderharr and family, Albert Schnee and Orville Nelson, Dell Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. John Reinders, Orange City, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henrich, Mr. and Mrs. John Henrich, Madison, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Henrich and Mrs. Carl Haag, Alton, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Jungers, Hospers, Ia.; Mrs. Margaret Schnee and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schnee and son and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pagel, all of Carthage; Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Eickman of Salem.

RESEARCH NOTES

His FindaGrave.com page adds a photo of the joint headstone of him and wife Clara; her life dates: Clara Schnee Adler (1893-1973); four children: Leland George Adler (1919-2011), Ethel Jean Adler Bohr (1920-2019), Audrey Joan Adler Richardson (1922-1983), and Donald Claire Adler (1924-2011). An unascribed added note includes two more: Lorraine Adler Moeller and Gloria Adler Chaney.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1916/1917 has groom George E. Adler, age 27, a farmer, resident of Hospers, nationality German, born in LeMars, parents Christ Adler and Anna Gronow; bride Clara C. Schnee, age 24, resident of Alton, nationality German, born in Alton, parents Wm. Schnee and Anna Henrich; married in Alton Nov. 30, 1916.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) shows him as a farmer, working for himself in Washington Township, Plymouth County, Iowa; married; tall, slender, gray eyes, light hair.
