Miss Anita “Katie” Van Bruggen, age 64, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at her home.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, February 12, at 11:00am, at the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Verlyn Boone will officiate. A luncheon and time of visitation will follow the service. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, at 2:00pm, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Anita Kay was born on July 31, 1957, in Hawarden, the daughter of Arie and Ann (Schiebout) Van Bruggen. When she was still a child, her family moved from a farm west of Ireton into town, where Anita attended the Ireton Christian School.

In 1975, Anita graduated from the Unity Christian High School in Orange City. One week after her graduation, she started working as a clerk at the Sioux County Recorder’s Office in Orange City, although she continued to make her home in Ireton. In 1981, she became deputy recorder, and seven years later she was elected as the Recorder. In the early 1990’s, Anita moved to Orange City, and remained in office as the Sioux County Recorder until her retirement on December 31, 2018, ending more than 43 years of service to the county. In July of last year, she moved to a condominium adjacent to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City.

Miss Van Bruggen was currently a member of the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, and a former member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church, where she was instrumental in the church’s library. Her servant heart was evident in her desire to help others, often volunteering at the Genesis House in Orange City, sharing the produce from her garden, helping with local elections, and calling bingo at the Pioneer Memorial Home. She enjoyed spending time tending to her plants at the Community Garden and rarely missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune. Anita was also an avid reader and frequent patron at the Orange City Public Library.

Survivors include her two sisters, Arlene, and her husband, Bob Feekes; and Debra Sue Van Bruggen, all of Orange City; four brothers and their wives, Marvin and Janice Van Bruggen, of Urbandale; Glen and Anita Van Bruggen, of Sioux Center; Kevin and Connie Van Bruggen, of George; and Michael and Randee Van Bruggen, of Harrisburg, South Dakota; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Elmer Kruid, of Ireton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a nephew and his wife, Jason and Christine Top; and a nephew-in-law, Brock Midthun.

Memorials will be given to the Christian Education Fund at the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church.
