From the Hawarden Independent, August 15, 1940:

MRS. L. M. LAKE DIED SUNDAY
Pioneer Resident Succumbs After Long Illness
Was 79 Years Old and Had Resided in Hawarden for 50 Years—Survived by One Son

Mrs. L. M. Lake, a resident of this city for the past 50 years, passed away at 7:20 Sunday evening, following an illness of several months. After spending the winter with her son in California, Mrs. Lake returned about the middle of April and at that time she was in poor health but she was able to be up and about until about six weeks ago when she became bedfast. She grew weaker constantly and her passing was not unexpected.

Funeral services were held at the Associated church at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning and due to the absence of the pastor of this church, Rev. R. F. Chapler of the Methodist church officiated. Paul and Miss Enida Snyder, children of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Snyder of Elk Point, old time friends of the family, each sang a solo with Mrs. Arol Sipes as accompanist on the organ. Mr. Snyder sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and Miss Snyder sang “In the Garden.” The remains were shipped to Harvard, Ill., her old home, for interment. Her cousin, Mrs. H. W. Des Jardien of Lincoln, Neb., accompanied the body to Harvard while Mr. and Mrs. Willis D. Lake motored there. Brief funeral services were held at Harvard Wednesday.

Carrie McPherson was born in Walworth county, Wis., July 3, 1861, and passed away August 11, 1940, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 8 days. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Harvard, Ill., where she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage with Lester M. Lake at Harvard on October 16, 1888, and to this union was born one son. The first two years of their married life Mr. and Mrs. Lake lived at Clinton, Wis., and in 1890 they came to Hawarden.

Coming to Hawarden as a young women, Mrs. Lake entered the church and social activities with vigor and for many years she was one of the leaders in the Congregational church. She was one of the sponsors of the Entre Nous Club and even though she was not so active in the organization in later years she was greatly interested in the work and enjoyed the sociability of the club to the utmost. She was also an ardent worker in the Ladies’ Aid when her health permitted. Besides being a member of the Congregational church she was a member of the Eastern Star lodge, She will be greatly missed among her friends in these organizations where she was always willing to do her part and even more.

Following the death of her husband May 5, 1936, Mrs. Lake lived alone but a year ago last July she went to California to be near her son. When she became ill last spring her desire was to return home and she arrived here about the middle of April. When her condition became more aggravated her cousin, Mrs. H. W. Des Jardien of Lincoln, Neb., came to be near her and about three weeks ago her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Willis D. Lake of Inglewood, Calif., came and remained with her until the end. She was the last member of a family of three children. Besides her son she is survived by one granddaughter, Miss Jeanette E. Lake of Inglewood, Calif.

Out of town relatives and friends who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank March, Vermillion; Paul Snyder and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Snyder and daughter Laura of Sioux City and Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Snyder and daughter Enida of Elk Point.
