From the Alton Democrat, March 17, 1923, Sioux Center Department:

DICK VANDER ZIEL PASSES ON
Young Man—Sole Support of Widowed Mother—Dies of Pneumonia—Buried on Birthday

The grim reaper has again entered our midst and where we recorded a few weeks ago that within only a few months three young men had been taken from us we are now again recording the death of a young man less than 20 years old. Dick Vander Ziel, the oldest son of Widow Vander Ziel succumbed to pneumonia on Monday afternoon. On Thursday of this week Dick would have been twenty years old, the very day on which he will be buried. This young man was a bread winner in the family and the widowed mother has our heartfelt sympathy in this hour of bereavement. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ypma.

From De Volksvriend, March 22, 1923, Sioux Center news (translated from the Dutch):

Dick, the oldest son of the Widow G. v. d. Ziel, died on 12 March. A great loss for the mother, as he would have been 20 years old on March 16 and could have given a lot of support to the family. Our condolences to the bereaved. Mrs. A. De Man, Dick’s sister, came from Ogilvie, and an uncle, A. v. d. Ziel, from Hollandale to the funeral. Funeral services were held Wednesday a.m. at the house, and at one o’clock in the Town Hall, under direction of Rev. Ypma.

From the Sioux Center Nieuwsblad, March 14, 1923 (translated from the Dutch):

Dick Vander Ziel, the oldest son of Mrs. Vander Ziel, died Monday from the flu and probably pneumonia. The funeral was held Wednesday from the Town Hall. The young man was already nineteen years old and a great support for his mother. He was just in a position to earn a good wage. We sympathize with the bereaved mother, who has already had a lot of worries in her life.
