From the Sioux Center News, February 2, 1939:

E. Vander Ziel Passed Away On Tuesday

Mr. Egbert Vander Ziel died at his home here Tuesday following fourteen years illness, the last four of which he had been bedridden. He would have been 89 years old in March. Funeral services will be held Friday, at 1:30 o'clock at the home and 2 P.M. at the Second Christian Ref. Church. Rev. M. Keuning will officiate.

He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth who has been a faithful nurse and housekeeper for her father during his many years of illness, a son Jacob of Hanford, California, and a son Aalt of Oak Park, Illinois. He was preceded in death by a son and his wife who died in 1935.

E. Vander Ziel Called

Egbert Vander Ziel died Jan. 31 at the home of his daughter, Miss Elizabeth Vander Ziel. He had reached the age of 88 years and would have been 89 on March 12. Born in the Netherlands, he married Miss Lubbitje Post in 1874 and came to the United States in May, 1908. There are three children surviving, namely Jacob living in California, Aalt of Chicago, who came for the funeral of his father, and Elizabeth who has cared for her father the past 14 years. Mrs. Vander Ziel died in 1935. Elizabeth will continue living in her home and sewing for the many people who have learned to love her for her patience and kindness.

His death certificate (informant Lizzie vander Ziel) has Egbert vander Ziel, widower of Lubbigje Post; resident of the U.S. and of Sioux Center 30 years 8 months; born March 12, 1850 in the Netherlands; parents Jacob vander Ziel and Aaltje Messelink; died at 10:00 a.m. January 31, 1939; cause, coronary thrombosis; contributory cause, arteriosclerosis.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Vander Ziel, Egbert, born 12 Mar 1850, d. 31 Jan 1939, father, ss Lubbigje, Memory Gardens, Sioux Center IA. FindaGrave.com has a photo of the joint headstone of Egbert and Lubbigje.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Egbert van der Ziel, born 12 March 1850 in Hattem, Gelderland, parents Jacob van der Ziel, age 42, a brick-maker’s helper, and Aaltje Meppelink, age 28. It also has a marriage index record for groom Egbert van der Ziel, age 24, born in Hattem, a farmhand, parents Jacob van der Ziel and Aaltje Meppelink; bride Lubbigje Post, age 19, born in Kampen, a maidservant, parents Gerrit Post, a laborer, and Beeltje van der Weerd; married in Kampen 19 March 1874.

The 1910 U.S. census for Sioux Center has Egbert Van der Ziel, age 60, married 36 years, born in Holland, immigrated 1908, an alien, an odd jobs laborer; wife Lubigje, age 55, mother of 6 children, 4 living, immigrated 1908; daughter Elizabeth, age 20, single, immigrated 1908, a dressmaker working at home; and son Gerrit, age 30, married 9 years (but no wife listed with them), immigrated 1908, a house carpenter.

In the 1920 census Egbert, Lubbertje, and Elizabeth are living together in Sioux Center, all immigrated in 1909, all aliens, Egbert a street work laborer and Elizabeth a dressmaker. In 1930 their immigration year is given as 1908, all speak Dutch, all aliens; Egbert has no occupation and Elizabeth is a seamstress.
