MEINE DE BOER

Meine De Boer who has suffered a lingering illness passed away at his home in Rock Valley Saturday morning April 27 at about six o’c1ock. Mr. De Boer, although he has been ill for the past two years, was able to look after matters connected with his farm until the past few weeks and it has seemed for days he could not tarry another day.

Meine De Boer was born May 14, 1863 at Openda, Netherlands. Here he married Miss Agnes Ruisch fifty three years ago. Nine years after he married he continued his abode in his native land, and then came to the United States of America settling in the Doon, Iowa, vicinity 45 years ago. To this union were born nine children as follows: Louis, Charles, Henry of Rock Valley; Hattie, Mrs. Harry Van Wyk, Orange City; Tepa, Mrs. John De Vries, Archer, Ia.; Ben of Rock Valley, Will of California, and Anna, Mrs. Paul Van Kekerix are twins, and John, of Archer.

On December 14, 1911, he was united in marriage to Mrs Catherine Haan De Vries at Holland, Mich. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on December 14, 1936, at their home in Rock Valley. Mr. De Boer moved into Rock Valley from the farm twenty years ago. Beside the widow he leaves to mourn his passing nine children, fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild and several step children.

He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church for many years and Reformed Church for many years.

Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 from the home and 2:00 o’clock from the Christian Reformed Church on Monday afternoon. Interment took place in Valley View cemetery.

Maarsma, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard De Vries, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. John De Vries, Archer, Ia.; Mr and Mrs. Leonard De Vries, Boyden, Ia; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Den Hartog, Sheldon, Ia; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence R. De Vries, Sioux Fails, S.D.

OBITUARIES – MEINE DE BOER

Meine De Boer was born on May 14, 1883 in Opeinde, Frjesland, Netherlands, and died at his home in Rock Valley on April 27, 1940 at the age of 76 years 11 months and 14 days. He grew to manhood and was married to Miss Anna Ruisch in the Netherlands, and nine years later they moved to a farm near Doon where they lived for twenty-five years. He married a second time, this time to Mrs. Catherine De Haan De Vries of Grand Rapids, Mich. on Dec. 14, 1911 and moved into the town of Rock Valley nine years later.

He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Hattie, Mrs. Harry Van Wyk of Orange City; Tena, Mrs. John De Vries of Archer and Anna, Mrs. Paul Van Kekerix of Rock Valley; five sons, Louis, Charles and Henry of Rock Valley; Will of California, and John of Archer. There are also fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 in the Christian Reformed church with Rev. Mr. H. J. Triezenberg officiating. Burial was made in Valley View cemetery.

His death certificate (informant John M. De Boer, Sanborn) adds that he was a resident of the U.S. 44 years and of Rock Valley 21 years, father L. De Boer, mother’s name unknown; died at 6:30 a.m. April 27, 1940; cause, carcinoma of the stomach with generalized carcinomotosis.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him born in Noordwijk, Marum Municipality, Groningen, Netherlands; spouses Agnes Ruisch De Boer (1864-1910, married 1887) and Catherine Haan De Vries (1866-1941, married 1911); 7 children listed. There is a photo of his headstone.

The Netherlands Birth Index on WieWasWie.nl has an entry for Meine de Boer, born 14 May 1863 in Noordwujk gem. Marum, Groningen; parents Lubbe de Boer, age 26, a laborer, and Trientje van der Velde.

WieWasWie.nl also has a marriage index record for groom Meine de Boer, age 26, parents Lubbe de Boer and Trientje van der Velde; bride Aukje Ruisch, age 26, parents Tjisse Willems Ruisch and Henke Bennes van der Lei; married in Kollumerland, Friesland, 23 Nov 1889.

The Kent County, Michigan marriage register for 1911 has groom Meine De Boer, age 47, resident of Duon[sic]. Iowa, a farmer, born in the Netherlands, parents Louis De Boer and Jena VanderVelde; bride Catrina De Vries, maiden name De Haan, age 46, resident of Grand Rapids, born in the Netherlands, parents Corn. De Haan and Effie Dap[?]; second marriage for both; married in Grand Rapids December 14, 1911.

Ancestry.com has a passport application for him (Dec 1923) that states he was born May 14, 1863, at Noorwyk, Groningen; emigrated to the United States, sailing from Rotterdam, in about April 1895 or 96; resided for about 25 years at or near Rock Valley; was naturalized by the District Court at Orange City on January 8, 1921. He is described as age 60; 5 feet [0?] inches tall; high forehead, blue eyes, large nose and mouth, round chin, hair white, complexion fair, face oval; no distinguishing marks. The passport includes a photo. An attached note by C. A. Walhof, vice president of the State Bank of Rock Valley, says that he wants to leave the port of New York shortly after the New Year to visit the Netherlands to look after some estate matters.
