Former Resident Dies—In California City

Mrs. John Umhoefer died April 4 in Los Angeles, Cal., according to news received by Alton friends. Mrs. Umhoefer was Lena Nemmers before her marriage and came to Alton from LeMars as a bride some forty years ago. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Nemmers, pioneer settlers of Plymouth county. She was 61 years of age at the time of her death and had lived for many years in California. Her husband and a family of eight children survive Mrs. Umhoefer, besides a number of sisters and brothers, including Mrs. Fischbach of Granville, Mrs. Clara Owen, Al, John and Nick Nemmers, all of LeMars.

Nemmers (1843-1925) and Katherine Marx Nemmers (1851-1928); spouse John Benedict Umhoefer (1865-1940, married 1891); children Alvin Francis Umhoefer (1892-1973), Walter Elmer Umhoefer (1902-1982), Esther E. Umhoefer (1907-1934).

The Plymouth County, Iowa marriage register for 1891 has groom John B. Umhoefer, age 26, residence Alton, Iowa, a lumber dealer, born in Milwaukee, parents Joseph Umhoefer and Anna M. Grada; bride Helena Nemmers, age 20, residence LeMars, Iowa, born in St. Donatas, Iowa, parents Michael Nemmers and Catherina Marx; married in LeMars September 1, 1891.
