From the Alton Democrat, April 19, 1940, Granville news:

August Mews, former resident of Granville, passed away at his home east of Paullina on Monday morning, April 8, at the age of 55 years. On August 11, 1907, he was married to Miss Anna Hoese of Milwaukee. Besides the widow, he is survived by five children, Mrs. Alfred Niebuhr, Mrs. Herbert Kuiese, Mrs. Raymond Niebuhr, Mrs. Ray Rehder and Marvin a junior in high school. One brother, John of Colton, S.D., and two sisters, Mrs. J. Schuester of Remsen and Mrs. Breeding of Bridgewater, S.D., and 5 grandchildren, also mourn his early demise.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. Hartmeister, pastor of the Zion Lutheran church at Paullina on Friday afternoon, with interment at Prairie View cemetery.

August Mews was born in Milwaukee January 15, 1885, and passed away at his home near Paullina March [i.e., April] 8, 1940, following a brief illness. Mr. Mews reached the age of 55 years and two months.

Mr. Mews was united in marriage to Miss Anna Hoese August 11, 1917, after which they made their home in O’Brien county. In 1928 they purchased a farm east of Paullina and have made their home there since.

Mr. Mews leaves to mourn, four daughters, Mrs. Alfred Niebhur, Mrs. Herbert Kniese, Mrs. Raymond Niebhur and Mrs. Raymond Rehder and one son, Marvin, who is at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Schleuter of Remsen and Mrs. Breeding of Bridgewater, S.D., and one brother of Colton, S.D.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the home and the Zion Lutheran church with Rev. J. Hartmeister officiating. Burial was made at the Prairie View cemetery.

His death certificate (informant Mrs. Aug. Mews) shows him a resident of Route 3 near Paullina, O’Brien County, resident there for 12 years; a farmer; born January 15, 1885 in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; parents August Mews and Amelia Maas, both born in Germany; wife Anna Mews; died at 9:45 a.m. April 8, 1940; cause, pulmonary and kidney abscess, duration 4 days; due to septic emboli, duration 4 days; due to teeth extraction; other conditions, general debilitation.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his wife as Anna Hesse Mews (1887-1978); children Hertha Viola Mews Niebuhr (1909-2004), Ruth Emily Mews Kniese (1912-1985), Ivadell Ethel Mews Niebuhr (1914-2014), Stella Olga Mews Rehder (1916-2006), and Marvin Mews (1924-1988).

News notes in the Alton Democrat, Granville news section, show him to have farmed in the Granville area in 1917-1918, and in the vicinity of Hospers in 1916. The 1920 U.S. census shows August Mews and family renting a farm in East Orange Township, Sioux County [Granville area]: August (34), Anna (32), Hertha (10), Ruth (7), Ivadell (5-11/12), and Stella (3-10/12). The 1925 Iowa state census also shows them living there, with the addition of son Marvin (1). By 1930 they are farming in Union Township, O’Brien County. The Ireton Ledger (January 19, 1928) says that he has recently purchased 80 acres one mile east of Paullina.

The Wisconsin Marriage Records index on Ancestry.com has an entry for August Mews, spouse Anna Haese, married in Milwaukee 19 Aug 1911.

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) shows him (age 33) to be of medium height and build, grey eyes, dark hair.
