Mrs. John Van Steenwyk Passes on a Week After Husband’s Death

Last week we reported on the death of Mr. John Van Steenwyk of Amarillo, Texas. This past week word was received by Mr. Wm. Van Steenwyk that Mrs. John Van Steenwyk had passed on also, a little over a week after the death of her husband.

From the Amarillo (Texas) Globe-Times, February 29, 1940:

Mrs. Van Steenwyk Dies in Hospital

Mrs. May Van Steenwyk, widow of John Van Steenwyk, died this morning at 3 o’clock at a local hospital following a long illness. Mr. Van Steenwyk died one week ago today. She was 67 years old.

She is survived by two sons, J. G. Van Steenwyk of Phoenix, Ariz., and D. E. Van Steenwyk of Long Beach, Cal.; and two daughters, Mrs. Florence Upshaw of Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Charles Boyd of Dallas.

The body is in state at the Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, pending the completion of funeral arrangements. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery beside the body of her husband.

Her death certificate (informant J. G. Van Steenwyk, Phoenix, Ariz.) has May Van Steenwyk, residence 4212 W. 11th Street, Amarillo, resident of Amarillo 17 years; widowed; born March 11, 1863 in Illinois; parents’ names not known to the informant; died in North West Texas Hospital, Amarillo, at 2:15 a.,. February 29, 1940; cause, nephritis and myocardial weakness, ulcer descending colon; buried in Llano Cemetery, Amarillo.

Her FindaGrave.com page has Mae Lee Weld Van Steenwyk, born 11 Mar 1863 in Illinois; died 29 Feb 1940 in Amarillo, Texas; buried in Llano Cemetery, Amarillo. Spouse John Van Steenwyk (1859-1940). Three children listed: Stella Mable Van Steenwyk Croom (1891-1918), Douglas Edgerton VanSteenwyk (1892-1962), Lucy Belle VanSteenwyk Boyd (1894-1986). There is a photo of her headstone: “Mae Van Steenwyk.”

The Sioux County marriage register for 1884 has groom John van Steenwyk, age 26, residence Dartington, Dak., a farmer, born in Pella, parents Abram van Steenwyk and M. L. C. Lecocq; bride May Lee Weld, age 23, resident of Settler Township, born in Marion Afle Co., Illinois, parents M. D. Weld and E. E. Eaton; married at the residence of M. D. Weld, Sioux County, July 23, 1884.
