From the Alton Democrat, March 8. 1940, Rock Valley news:

Mrs. Peter De Jonge, a former resident here, but lately of the Doon vicinity, passed away recently and the remains were taken to Hudson, S.D., former home of the family, for interment.

The Sioux County Index (Hull), February 23, 1940, Local News Items, has this note: Mrs. Pete De Young of Doon, who was admitted to the hospital last Wednesday, was operated on yesterday. In the same column for March 1, 1940, is this note: Mrs. Pete De Young of Doon died at the hospital Monday, of acute gall bladder infection.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate (informant Henry Weidema) has Mrs. Effie Weidema De Young, wife of Peter De Young; born March 7, 1887 in Schettens, Netherlands; parents Rudolf Weidema and Tena Feenstra, also both born in Schettens; in the U.S. for 31 years; usual residence rural Lyon County, 2 miles east and ½ mile south of Doon; in the Hull community 1 year; died in the Hull Hospital, where she had been for 12 days, at 7:30 a.m. February 26, 1940; cause, ruptured appendix, duration 2-15 [or 2-13?] and cholocystitis, duration 2-11; was operated on for drainage of appendical abscess on 2-21-40; buried in Hudson, S.D.

FindaGrave.com has Effie DeYoung, 1887-1940, buried in Eden Cemetery, Hudson, Lincoln County, S.D.; husband Peter DeYoung (1885-1956), son Pete DeYoung (1917-1949).

The 1910 U.S. census for Virginia Township, Union County, South Dakota has Peter (25) and Effie (23) De Young, married 1 year, born in Holland, immigrated in 1909, and their son Rudolph (7/12), born in Iowa; Peter is a farm laborer.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Aafke Weidema; parents Ruurd Weidema and Trijntje Feenstra; born 7 March 1887 in Friesland.

It is possible that they actually married after coming to Iowa. The Sioux County marriage register for 1909/1910 has groom Popke de Jong, age 24, a Hollander, residence Sioux Center, a farmer; parents Ruward de Jong and Pietje Blutstra; bride Afke Wiedema, age 23, a Hollander, residence Sioux Center, parents Remce Wiedema and Tryntje Vienstra; married in Orange City July 8, 1909. No marriage record for them was readily located in WieWasWie.nl.

Her husband Peter’s obituary (posted separately) also spells her birth name Wiedema.
