Soource – Sioux County Death records John A. Bushull (Bushnell) , married, a brakeman, age 30 born 1867 Germany died 3 Apr 1897 Hawarden IA, buried 12 Apr 1897 at Sioux City, IA.

The Hawarden Independent of April 8, 1897
Brakeman Drowned – John Bushnell, a brakeman on Conductor Stuart’s train on the Milwaukee road, fell from the bridge four miles north of town at 5:10 p.m., Saturday afternoon, and drowned in the Sioux River before assistance could reach him. His home was in Sioux City and he leaves a wife.
He had been out all day in the cold rain and work having been completed on the bridge he started to climb onto the pile driver when his hand slipped and he fell back wards into the surging stream. The other hands ran for the boat but before they could reach him he had sank for the last time. The water was about fifteen feet deep where he went down and the body has not yet been recovered. The Milwaukee company wired to spare no efforts to find the body and searching partied have been up and down the river every day, but without avail. In all probability the body is lodged beneath some pile of drift and will not be recovered until the water subsides. Later – In dragging the river with grab-hooks the body was recovered this Friday morning.

(Submitter could not readily find the wife or family of John Bushnell)
