Joan Van Gorp, age 96, of Sioux Center, IA, formerly of Boyden, IA died Monday, December 20, 2021, at Sioux Center Health Center in Sioux Center, IA. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 27th, at the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden, with Pastor Andrew Hilla officiating. Lunch will be served immediately after the service. Burial will follow in the Sheridan Township Cemetery in Boyden, IA.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers the Van Gorp Family prefers memorials be directed to United Presbyterian Church, 817 Lincoln Street, Boyden, IA 51234.

Joan Van Gorp was born on February 2, 1925, on a farm one mile south of Boyden, IA, the daughter of John A. and Gertie (Van Stryland) Van Roekel. She grew up in the Boyden area and attended the local Country School through the 8th grade.

Joan was united in marriage to Philip Van Gorp on March 29, 1946, at the First Reformed Church parsonage in Boyden. The couple made their home in Boyden. Joan cleaned houses for others in the Boyden and Hull areas. She worked at the local egg produce in Boyden and assisted her husband, Philip, with their trucking service that they owned and operated for 26 years. When they retired, Philip and Joan enjoyed camping and fishing for many years. They also wintered in McAllen, TX and Mesa, AZ for a total of 28 years. Philip and Joan moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in 2005. They were blessed to have celebrated 60 years of marriage in March 2006. Philip passed away on June 10. 2006. Joan lived in Sheldon for four more years, then moved to Franken Manor Independent Living in Sioux Center, in 2010.

Joan was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church of Boyden and a member of the Boyden Community Birthday Club. Her hobbies were crocheting edged blankets, baby and regular afghans, also, including 100’s of hanger covers. She sewed together strips of cloth for rug making, enjoyed baking and embroidery work. Everyone will cherish the gifts of her special talents. Joan loved playing cards and games. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Phyllis (the late James) Walburg of Spirit Lake, IA, Joyce (Orv) Bruxvoort of Orange City, IA, Janice (Ben) Jans of Sioux Center, IA, and Karen (Garvin) Buyert of Rock Valley, IA; ten grandchildren, Michelle Kremer (and friend, Greg Thilges) of Estherville, IA, Lynn (John) Jorgensen of Hill City, SD, Kari (Adir) Morales of Tea, SD, Laurie Steinkuehler of Spencer, IA, Darren Bruxvoort of Colorado Springs, CO, Eric (Wanda) Bruxvoort of Sac City, IA, Christie (Jon) Conover of Orange City, IA, Brian (Holli) Jans of Sioux Falls, SD, Adam Buyert of Rock Valley, IA, and Amber (Michael) Van Driel of Rock Valley, IA; thirty great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eunice (Don) Van Der Weide of Mesa, AZ, and Albertha “Bert” Roetman of Sioux Falls, SD; nieces, nephews and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John A. and Gertie Van Roekel; husband, Philip Van Gorp; son-in-law, James Walburg; six siblings, Nancy (John) Horn, Albert (Marie) Van Roekel, Gertrude (Tunis) Vander Lee, Mina (Howard) Harman, Abe J. (Alice, Jeanette, Gert) Van Roekel, and Hennrietta (Dale) Ferwerda; four in-laws, Lois (Cornie) Rensink, Marvin (Gert) Van Gorp, Earl (Wilma) Van Gorp, and Albert (Dorothy) Van Gorp; nieces, nephews and family & friends.
