Mrs. Leona Schreur, age 86, formerly of Alton, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, August 9, at 10:30am, at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. Scott Bonestroo will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Leona Mae was born on March 16, 1935, in Hull, the daughter of William and Margaret (Hoksbergen) Riphagen. She was raised on a farm near Hull and attended the Perkins School and Hull Public School. Following graduation from high school, she attended the Northwestern Junior College, in Orange City, where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught school in Little Rock for a few years.

She was united in marriage to Robert John Schreur on June 14, 1955, in Hull. They made their home in Alton, where they raised their five daughters. Leona later started working at the Alton Public Library, where she coordinated the children’s programs, and later became the head librarian and served on the Board of Directors. Robert passed away on July 2, 1997, in Alton, after more than 42 years of marriage.

Mrs. Schreur was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where she was involved in Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, and the women’s organizations. She had also been a member of the Inspiration Hills auxiliary and volunteered for the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice. She enjoyed baking and cooking, gardening, and reading.

Survivors include her five daughters, Bonnie, and her husband, Ron Hawks, of Waverly, Illinois; Barb Schreur, of Washington, Iowa; Rhonda, and her husband, Bill Zahren, of West Des Moines; Mindy, and her husband, Patrick Sullivan, of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey; and Jodi Belcher, and her fiancé, Doug Johnson, of Schaller; ten grandchildren, Haley Zahren, Jena Zahren, Caleb Hawks, Brooke Belcher, Madison Belcher, Gavin Belcher, Kyle Sullivan, Kaitlin Sullivan, Delaney Sullivan, and Lane Johnson; a sister, Milly Mulder, of Orange City; a sister-in-law and her husband, Joyce and Harold Van Wettering, of Hospers; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Arend and Bev Schreur, of Sioux City, and Raymond and Bev Schreur, of Alton; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Carl Mulder; four sisters-in-law, Geraldine Schreur, Gertrude Gustad, Dorothy Lubben, and Loretta Carney; and a nephew, Rodney Mulder.

Memorials may be directed to Inspiration Hills or the Alton Reformed Church.
