Mrs. Sadie Van Peursem, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2021, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.
There will be a funeral service on Friday, June 18, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Wick Hubers and the Rev. Brandon Van Marel will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Sadie was born on June 22, 1930, on a farm southwest of Sioux Center, the youngest of five children born to Johannes and Agnes (Katje) De Groot. She grew up on her family’s farm and attended country school through the ninth grade.
On February 22, 1950, she was united in marriage to Marion Alfred Van Peursem, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Following Marion’s discharge from the military in 1953, the couple settled on a farm place one mile north of Maurice, where they raised their three daughters. In addition to being a wife and mother, Sadie was active in helping her husband with the daily responsibilities of farm life. After her children were grown, she also worked at the Casey’s Bakery in Sioux Center. In 2007, the couple retired and moved to Orange City, where Marion passed away on July 17, 2009, after more than 59 years of marriage. In 2012, Sadie moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, and in 2020, she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center.
Mrs. Van Peursem was a long-time member of the First Reformed Church in Maurice, where in earlier years she had been an active volunteer. She enjoyed playing card games and attending her grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. Time spent with her family and friends was important to her, and although the last couple of years made that difficult, she still maintained regular contact with them over the telephone. She will be fondly remembered for her loving and caring nature, her strong work ethic, and her wonderful sense of humor.
She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Barb and Jim Bynes, of Hull; and Kathy and Bill Van Marel and Lori and Ray Van Gorp, all of Orange City; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Sara and Scott Grevengoed, Craig Bynes and Kristie, Chad and Amber Bynes, Brandon and Kelly Van Marel, Blayne and Candace Van Marel, Brittany and Ryan Kiel, Britton and Tanya Van Marel, Leah and Mike Kragskow, Kyle and Sarah Van Gorp, and Corey and Tana Van Gorp; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Leola De Jong, of Orange City; two brothers-in-law, Dean Van Peursem, and his wife Gladys, of Snohomish, Washington; and Perry Jager, of Maurice; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Pete and Alice De Groot; three sisters and their husbands, Elsie and Alfred Wissink, Janet and Gene Wagner, and Dorothy and Cornie Vander Stelt; her husband’s infant brother; a brother-in-law, John De Jong; and two sisters-in-law, Carol, and her husband, Peter De Koter; and LeAnn Jager.
Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church in Maurice.
