Van Deest, Jozephus Herman ‘Joe’ H. born May 1862 (1859) died 2 July 1929

There is a discrepancy with his birth year, his birth record states 23 May 1959, no other children born to that couple on the day month and years other than this on born in 1959. All other references in the USA are born 23 May 1862. He either forgot what year he was born or thought it was better to be more of the same age as his wife????

1925 Iowa census lists birth year as 1862 and lists parents as Reinder Van Deest and Frouwina (Catherina) Kremer.

Birth Record in the Netherlands lists Jozephus Herman van Deest born 23 May 1859 at Oude Pekela Groningen Netherlands to Reinder Van Deest a miller age 37 and Anna Catherina Kremer, Jozephus was born 23 May 1859 at Oude Pekela Groningen.

See the obit of his wife Jennie ‘Jane’ Juffer Mrs. J. H. Van Deest 1876-1956 Their two children were Ray Van Deest and Maggie Mrs. Ernest Mulder.

Sioux Center News of July 3, 1929 In Dutch
Translated:
Tuesday afternoon, Mr. J. H. Van Deest, aged 67 years, due to pleurisy. The deceased had been unwell for several months and was so weakened that he could not withstand the onslaught of pleurisy. The deceased is survived by his wife and partner and two children, Mrs. Ernest Mulder and Ray Van Deest. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at half past one at home and at two o'clock a service in the Central Ref. Church.
The deceased has been mayor of the Sioux Center for many years. We believe that no one has held that position for so many years before, Mayor Van Deest was always wanted and was there as mayor to manage the town as economically as possible. Because of his many years of experience as a councilman and mayor, he was excellently acquainted with all matters pertaining to city administration. It will be extremely difficult to find a successor who will take care of the town business with such general satisfaction.
