Hegg, Peer Siegfried 1936 – 2019

Rock Valley Bee of May 20, 2020

Obituary of Peer Siegfried Hegg, born August 26, 1936, at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, IA, to Dr. Lester Raymond Hegg and Palma Elizabeth Erickson Hegg. He passed away November 21, 2019, at home in Hacienda Heights, California.

Peer was preceded in death by his parents, Brother, Horace, and sister in law, Gretchen. He is survived by his wife of 63 years. Patricia Hegg; Two daughters, Laura Hegg and Lisa Kensington, one son, Cary Hegg, and grandchildren Daniel Hegg, James Rogers, and Emma Kensington. Also many Hegg and Erickson relatives.

Peer always told the story that the name ‘Peer’ was suggested by Sister Mary Margaret at the hospital in reference to the musician. Edward Grieg of Norway who wrote the Peer Gynt Suite. His parents took her suggestion. Peer did have a special musical career as he was an excellent pianist, and he was a trumpeter in the school band for many years. His talent also extended to his singing voice, which was much appreciated by his surrounding friends at the Sunday morning church services.

Peer lived in Rock Valley, Iowa, from birth until September , 1954 when he went to college at Iowa University in Iowa City. He played on the varsity basketball team. He also met his wife to be, Patricia Kay Osterling, from Cherokee, Iowa, at an Inter Dorm Dance and the ‘Rest is history’.. they were married on February 26, 1956l

The Golf Bug got him in early 1959, and off we went to sunny California. We settled in Whittier, and soon Peer began his 43 – year career as a salesman at Harris Oldsmobile. He retired in 2003 and honed is skills at ‘grocery shopping’ filling our kitchen with abundance.

Peer will be missed by many…all of his family and friends near and far. He will also he missed for his ‘on ‘pitch’ voice from the church pew that kept many on cue.

When learning of Peer’s death, a friend said, He was a gentle giant. Let all of us remember him that way.
