From the Sioux County Index (Hull), December 9, 1938:

Old Time Hull Man Died at Iowa City Last Wednesday

J, W, Wagner, 79 years old, 600 W. Third street, Sioux City, died Wednesday, November 30th, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Beckman, at Iowa City. Mr. Wagner had been receiving treatment in a hospital there.

Mr. Wagner was born March 15, 1859, at Prairieburg, Iowa. After farming near Hull for many years he retired and moved to Sioux City in 1909. He married Inez Whitney in 1881 at Prairieburg.

Surviving are the widow; a son, R. D. Wagner of Anaheim, California; two daughters, Mrs. C. A. Beckman of Iowa City and Mrs. Ruth Wollburg of Omaha; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon and was attended by a very large number of sorrowing friends. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

DEATH TAKES J. W. WAGNER
Plan Funeral Services Friday for Father of Mrs. Beckman

Mr. J. W. Wagner, 79, father of Mrs. Charles A. Beckman, 406 Reno street, died at 8 o’clock this morning at the home of his daughter. A former resident of Sioux City, he has lived here for the last three months. Mr. Wagner had been in ill health for the last few weeks.

The son of William and Mary Wagner, he was born on a farm near Prairieburg, Iowa, March 15, 1859. He was married to Inez Whitney of Prairieburg on February 8, 1881, in Marion.

Mr. Wagner had moved to Hull, Iowa, in Sioux county in 1880 but returned to Prairieburg for a year. After his marriage the couple returned to Hull where they farmed for 30 years. In 1909 they moved to Sioux City where they have resided ever since.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Ross D., of Anaheim, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Beckman of Iowa City and Mrs. John Wollburg of Omaha, Nebr. One son, Ralph, died in 1911.

Funeral services will be held at Beckman’s Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Dr. Edwin E. Voigt of the Methodist church in charge of the services. The remains will then be taken to Sioux City for services in the Knox Presbyterian church Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Graceland cemetery at Sioux City.

An obituary similar to that in the Sioux County Index was published in the Sioux City Journal, December 1, 1938; it includes a photo of him.

His death certificate gives his full name, James Wesley Wagner, and adds his parents, William Wagner and Mary Jane Keyser, both born in Pennsylvania; retired from farming in 1920, having farmed for 40 years; had been in Iowa City for 4 months, 15 days; died at 8 a.m. November 30, 1938; cause, partial coronary occlusion, onset July 15, 1938, confirmed by a sclero-cardiogram; contributory cause, complete coronary occlusion from arterio-sclerosis, onset Nov. 30, 1938.

The Linn County marriage register for 1880/1881 has groom James W. Wagner, age 22, residence Doon, Lyon County, a farmer, born in Prairieburg, Iowa, parents Wm Wagner and Mary J. Kaiser; bride Inez Amelia Whitney, age 21, resident of Prairieburg, born in Prairieburg, parents Joseph Whitney and Dorothy Peeterson; married at Marion, Iowa, February 8, 1881.
