Mrs. Demuth Former Resident of Alton

Mrs. Bert Demuth of Woodstock, Minn., long a resident of the Alton community, died Saturday night [April 9], according to news reaching relatives here. She was the former Appolonia Nemmers and attended school here. After her marriage to Mr. Demuth she lived in this vicinity for several years before the family moved to Woodstock. She was nearly 59 years of age and is survived by her husband and seven children besides a sister, Mrs. Nick Welter of Woodstock, a brother, Hubert Nemmers of Mitchell, S.D., and several half brothers, including Nick Huss of Alton; Ted Huss of Faulkton, S.D.; Joe Huss, Ashton and Matt Huss, Fairmont, Minn.

Alton relatives who attended the funeral services at Woodstock Wednesday morning were her brother, Nick Huss, and the Misses Susan and Mary Hoxmeier, cousins of Mrs. Demuth. The Misses Hoxmeier accompanied Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Nemmers of Le Mars to Woodstock. The Kokenge family here are also cousins of Mrs. Demuth, who was a sister of the late Mrs. Henry Kokenge.

Death Saturday of Woodstock Woman
Mrs. Bert Demuth Succumbs on Way to Hospital; Funeral Wednesday Morning

The death of Mrs. Bert Demuth, well known resident of the vicinity of Woodstock, occurred Saturday evening, while she was en route to Pipestone to enter the hospital. The cause of her death was acute cardiac dilatation. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic church in Woodstock at 9:00 o’clock Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Demuth was about 57 years of age and is survived by her husband and several children. A complete obituary will be published later.

OBITUARY – MRS. BERT De MUTH

Death called Mrs. B. DeMuth Saturday evening, April 9. Her health had not been good for several years, but she had been able to be around until Friday evening when she suffered a heart attack due to her diabetic condition.

Appalania[sic] Nemmers was born at Alton, Iowa, April 18, 1880. She died at Woodstock April 9, 1938. At the time of her death she was 57 years, 11 months, 9 days old. She was united in marriage to Bert Peter DeMuth at Alton, Iowa, the 26th day of November, 1902. They resided on a farm there for about 4 years, later moving to Adrian, Minn., where they lived for 12 years. From there they moved to Woodstock where they have since resided.

Those left to mourn her death are her husband and children: Lawrence, Wilfred, Helen, Lewis and Margaret at home; Mrs. Bill Boese of Ogalvie, Minn., and Mrs. Adolph Timmer of Woodstock. Mrs. DeMuth had two grandchildren.

She is survived by five brothers and one sister. They are Mrs. Nick Welter, Hubert Nemmers, Ted Huss, Nick Huss, Joe Huss, Matt Huss, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Pete Nemmers. One brother Pete Nemmers of Fulda and one sister Mrs. Josephine Kokenge of Alton preceded her in death about 20 years ago.

Acting as pall bearers were: Frank Timmer, Henry Kellen, Geo. Nece, John Biever, Val Dries and John George. As honorary pall bearers were John Campbell, Gene LeBrune, Jerome Schneider, Peter Daniels, N. J. Biever and Jim Feyeriesen. [Followed by a long list of relatives attending from a distance.]

Her FindaGrave.com page gives her full name as Abigail Appolonia Nemmers Demuth; born 18 April 1880 at Alton, Iowa; died 9 April 1938 at Pipestone, Pipestone County, Minnesota; buried in Saint Martins Cemetery, Woodstock, Pipestone County. Spouse, Bernard Peter Demuth (1879-1951). Children: Lawrence Peter Demuth (1904-1949), Wilfred Anthony Demuth (1905-1961), Helen Mary Demuth (1908-1988), Louis A. Demuth (1910-1983), Ida Katherine Demuth Boese (1911-1979), Verena Elisabeth Demuth Timmer (1913-2006), and Margaret Caroline Demuth Wiese (1918-1988). There is a photo of her headstone, and a photo of four unidentified children. An added note says she was the daughter of Nicholas D. Nemmers and Anna Kaiser.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1901 has groom Bernard Demuth, age 23, resident of Gilbertsville, a farmer, born in Black Hawk County, parents Peter Demuth and M. Mangerich; bride Appolonia Nemmers, age 22, resident of Alton, born in Sioux County, parents Nicholas Nemmers and A. Kaiser; married at Alton November 26, 1901.
