Lambert Van Wyhe Passes Away at Sioux Falls
One of Sioux County’s Pioneer Residents had reached the age of 78.

Lambert Van Wyhe, one of Rock Valley’s highly respected citizens, answered the summons of death at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S. D., Monday evening [Sept. 26] at 7:40 o’clock.

Funeral services were announced for Thursday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at the residence and at 1:30 from the First Reformed Church, The Rev. John Aberson, officiating. Interment will take place in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Born at Kampen, Netherlands, providence Gelderland, on December 30, 1859, Mr. Van Wyhe came to America 57 years ago. Married on January 23, 1884, at Alton, Iowa, to Miss Alice Ruisch. 10 children were born to them, one son Gerrit, died at the age of 18 years.

The surviving are the widow and children, Mrs. John Van Berkum, Steen, Minn.; Mrs. Neal Doornewaard, Lester, Ia.; Mrs. Henry Wynia, Hills, Minn.; John Van Wyhe, Lester, Ia.; Mrs. John Vande Voorn, Rock Rapids, Ia.; Mrs. Leo Cogswell, Rock Valley, Ia.; Mrs. Barney Siemansma, Rock Valley, Ia.; Dick Van Wyhe, Colton, S.D.; and Lee Van Wyhe, Orange City, Ia. He also leaves 41 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Three brothers survive him, whom are Dick Van Wyhe, Lynden, Wash., J.W. Van Wyhe, Ireton, IA., and Jake Van Wyhe, Perkins, Iowa.

Prior to his retirement Mr. Van Wyhe was engaged in farming, for 24 years, north of Sioux Center. The past 24 years he had resided at Rock Valley, Ia. when he found and enjoyed the companionship of a large circle of friends.

Mr. Van Wyhe was a man of pleasing personality and greatly enjoyed the association of his friends. His general health had been good until just recently.

Lambert Van Wyhe Answers Summons

Lamber[t] Van Wyhe died suddenly in the hospital in Sioux Falls Monday evening at 7:45 o’clock. Mr. Van Wyhe was taken to the hospital two weeks before his death. He submitted to an operation after his arrival at the hospital and seemed to be getting along nicely, and hopes ere entertained for his recovery, but other complications developed, together with a weak heart, which caused his death.

Mr. Van Wyhe was born in Holland, December 9, 1859, and had attained the age of seventy-eight years, nine months and seventeen days. He came to this country when he was sixteen years old, and resided in Sioux county for the past sixty-three years. He followed the occupation of farming but had retired from the farm several years and since had made his home in Rock Valley.

He was a very successful farmer and a man who was highly thought of wherever he was known, and he will be greatly missed by his family and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Van Wyhe was united in marriage January 23, 1883, with Alice Ruisch at Alton, Iowa. Ten children were born to this union, one boy was killed in an automobile accident about fifteen years ago. He is survived by his wife and nine children. The children are: John, of Lester, Iowa; Dick of Collins, S.D.; Lee of Orange City; Mrs. Dora Siemonsma and Mrs. Mina Cogswell of Rock Valley; Mrs. Gertie Wynia, of Hills, Minn.; Mrs. Ann Van Burkum, Mrs. Ella Dodewaard and Mrs. Jennie Vander Voorn, of Lester. He also leaves three brothers, Dick who lives in the stste of Washington; Jake, of Perkins; and J. W. of Ireton, besides other relatives.

Funeral services will be held in the home at 1:00 o’clock and in the First Reformed church in Rock Valley at 1:30 P.M., this Thursday.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Mother Hendrikje Mulder Van Wyhe (1832-1901); father not listed. Seven siblings listed. Wife Aaltje Ruisch Van Wyhe (1858-1943, married 1884). Eight of their children are listed.
