From the Alton Democrat of Feb 28, 1903 Rock Valley News.
J. H. Gerla recieved a telegram announcing the death, on the seventeenth of this mouth, of his father, at Missoula, Montana. Deceased was eighty-one years of age, and been failing in health for the past year. Last April Mr. Gerla visited his father, when he was ill, but at that time he recovered. Besides J. H. Gerla of this place, there are three daughters living, all residing in Montana, and one other son living in the old country.
Deceased was well known in Alton where he visited a number of times during his son's residence there.
(Hendrik Gerla born 24 Jun 1821 Rotterdam Neth. to Leendert Gerla and Rebekka Hoppers married Apr 19, 1843 to Cathrina Driemeijer. Children were Rebecca 1843, Leendert 1845, Johan Hendrik 1847, Maria 1852, Rebecca 1855, Catherina 1857 and Gertrui 1861.)
