Mrs. M. Van Donge, 99, Passes Away Thursday
Hold Rites Monday For Oldest Citizen

Funeral services were held at the First Christian Reformed church here at 1:30 p.m. Monday for Mrs. Maggie Van Donge, 99, Sioux Center's oldest citizen, a resident of the community since 1918, who died at the Nursing Wing of the Sioux Center Community hospital Thursday following a brief illness. She had resided in the Nursing Wing the past three years.

Services were conducted by the Rev. B. J. Haan and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community cemetery under the direction of Co-opeative Funeral Service.

Mrs. Van Donge was born in the province Friesland (The Netherlands) March 11, 1862, the daughter of Bart Nauta and Jessie Annama. At the age of 5 she immigrated with her parents to the U.S. and lived for a short time in Michigan prior to moving to Dispatch, Kan. There she grew to womanhood and was married to Peter Van Donge.

In 1918 she moved with her husband and children to Sioux Center. Mr. Van Donge died six years later on November 22, 1924. Mrs. Van Donge lived after that time with her various children until moving to the local Nursing Wing.

Survivors include four sons, Dan of Soldier, Kan., Paul and Bart of Sioux Center, Edward of Ireton; six daughters, Mrs. Henry Koops, Mrs. Albert DeRaad and Mrs. Ben Koops, all of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Lena Boxus of Cawker City, Kan., Mrs. Fred Spaide of Lebanon, Kan., and Mrs. Ralph Lammers of Sioux Center; two brothers, Cornelius Nauta and Sam Nauta, both of Raton, New Mexico; and three sisters, Mrs. Kate Otto of Downs, Kan., Mrs. Mary Preston of Folsom, New Mexico, and Mrs. Sarah Tondrow of Florida. She is also survived by 37 grandchildren, 106 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister. Had she lived to March 11, 1963, Mrs. Van Donge would have observed her 100th birthday.

Those from a distance who were here for the funeral included Mrs. Mabel Massey of Goff, Kan., Donald Van Donge of Soldier, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Dan Van Donge of Soldier, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Van Donge of Ottawa, Kan., Lloyd Boxum of Great Bend, Kan., Mrs. Bertha Hofer of Portis, Kan., Mrs. Wayne Miller of Cawker City, Kan., Pete Boxum of Lebanon, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Harold Boxum of Downs, Kan., Mrs. Mary Spaid of Lebanon, Kan., Miss Florence Tietgens of Lebanon, Kan., Mrs. Jane Koops and Ronnie Koops of Denver, Colo.
