Mrs. Helen Eldridge, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at the Bickford Cottage in Sioux City.
There will be a funeral service on Monday, September 10, at 10:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Keith Krebs will officiate. There will be a graveside service on Monday, at 1:30pm, at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven.
Helen Marie was born on October 7, 1921, in Estherville, the daughter of David G. and Bess (Runkle) Toelle. She was raised on the family farm near Spencer, where she attended a country school and graduated from the Spencer High School.
On June 22, 1947, she married Maurice Eugene Eldridge at the Methodist Church in Ruthven. They lived in Ames, Sioux City, and Wapello. In October of 1954, they moved to Orange City. She was employed by the Iowa Highway Commission, Bjornstad Drug, and De Vries Interiors. In later years, they lived on an acreage on the edge of town. He passed away on March 18, 1994, in Sioux City.
In June of 2008, Helen became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. In May of this year, she transferred to the Bickford Cottage.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church, where she participated in a circle and taught Sunday school classes. She also belonged to the Literature Club, the Ramblers, the Sewing Club, and the Women’s Club, all in Orange City.
Mrs. Eldridge liked animals, boating, crafts, reading, RVing, and traveling to Europe. Her favorite hobby was sewing. She enjoyed the farm life and her time with the children, grandchildren, and her dog, Ben.
Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Susan Rae and Neil Johnson, of Orange City; her son and his wife, Scott Eugene and Diane Eldridge, of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Dr. Erik Johnson, and his wife, Marjo, of Elk Point, South Dakota; Alec Johnson, and his wife, Suzanne, of Vermillion, South Dakota; Joshua Eldridge, of McCook Lake, South Dakota; Tyler Eldridge, of Stanley, North Dakota; and Paige Eldridge and Ross Eldridge, both of Sioux City; six great-grandchildren, Victoria, Sophia, Hayes, Nash, Georgia, and Jack Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Elaine (W. John) Johnson, of Ames; and Maxine Eldridge, of Terril; and nephews and nieces.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles (LaVonne) Toelle; her parents-in-law, Charles and Alma Eldridge; four brothers-in-law, Harvey (Evelyn) Eldridge, Marion (Wilma) Eldridge, Donald Eldridge, and Eber (Evelyn) Eldridge; and a nephew, Michael Toelle.
