James Van Berkum, Sr.
James Van Berkum, Sr., 80, of Rock Valley died November 4 at his home ( after a long illness. Services were Saturday at Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.

Van Berkum was born July 9,1907, in Sioux Center. He married Magdalene Vande Berg July 9, 1929, in Hull. The couple lived in Sioux Center for a year, farmed in Minnesota, for three years ,and moved to Rock Valley where he was custodian at Rock Valley Public School from 1939 until 1953. He then worked for Rock Valley Cement Block and Tile Co., until retiring in 1972. He was a member of Pioneer United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, James R. of Rock Valley, Leslie and Arlyn, both of Le Mars, and John of Jackson, Michigan; a daughter, Elenore Lawrence of Spencer; five brothers, Laurence, Raymond and Wallace, all of Rock Valley, Alvin of Orange City and Edwin of Inwood; a sister, Alice Prins of Orange City; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren
