Wallace J. Zwagerman

Mr. Wallace Zwagerman, age 78, of Hospers, passed away Friday, September 22, 2000, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema officiated. Interment followed at the Hospers Cemetery under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.

Wallace Jay was born January 24, 1922, at Hospers, the son of Jacob and Betha (De Boer)Zwagerman. He was raised on a farm between Hospers and Newkirk and graduated from the Newkirk High School. On October 9, 1944, he married Etta Elizabeth Van Gelder in Orange City. They first lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and Big Springs, Texas, where "Wally" was stationed with the United States Air Force. They then made their home in Hospers, where they owned and operated Zwagerman Hardware since 1949. Etta passed away December 9, 1997, in Hospers. In August of this year, Mr. Zwagerman became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. He was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church, where he had been active in many organizations, especially Men's Brotherhood.

Wally enjoyed woodworking, golfing, and traveling. In later years, he and Etta attended several Elderhostels. They also made two trips to the Christian Appalachian Home Mission in Kentucky, where they did volunteer work.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Jeff and Jan Zwagerman, of Sibley; his daughter and her husband, Joan and Dave Curbow, of Alta; and five grandchildren, Jill (Zwagerman), and her husband, Chris Lieb, of Omaha, Nebraska; Jay Zwagerman and Jed Zwagerman, both of Sibley; and Anne Curbow and James Curbow, both of Alta. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospers Public Library.
