Obituary: Rock Valley, IA: Albert Van Oort, 95, of Rock Valley, died Sunday June 24, 2012 at Whispering Heights. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Thursday at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday until 5 at Porter Funeral Home and 6:30-8pm with family at First Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministries.
Albert was born February 3, 1917 at Matlock, IA, son of Cornelius and Albertha (Nyenhuis) Van Oort. He farmed with his brother Henry before serving (March 1942-October 1945) in the U.S. Army during WW II including the Normandy Invasion. Albert married Jeanette Bobeldyk on March 15, 1946 at Inwood, Iowa. Together they lived at Rock Valley where Albert was the Council Oak Grocery Store Manager before being a Standard Oil Bulk Tank Agent. He worked Hegg Memorial Hospital Maintenance for 11 years and also volunteered 10 years with Hope Haven Ministries. Albert enjoyed being with family and helping the kids with their homes and building furniture for the grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and golf. Albert was loving, kind, gentle, humble, and hardworking.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Jeanette; daughters, Kathy (Jack) Kersbergen of Brighton, CO, Linda (Joe) Gacke of Hudson, SD; son, Doug (Mary Kay) Van Oort of Cedar Rapids, IA; 6 grandchildren, Daniel (Sarah) Gacke, Rebecca Wilger, David Gacke, Andrew Kersbergen, Jacob and Adam Van Oort; 3 great-grandchildren, Emerald Gacke, Dylan Wilger, Aidan Wilger; brothers, Henry Van Oort of Rock Rapids, IA, Arnold (Marianne) Van Oort of Hankinson, ND; sister, Harriet Thompson of Sioux Falls, SD.
Albert was preceded in death by his sisters and their husbands, Jane (Weber) Burgers, Eva (Edwin) Van Berkum; sisters-in-law, Myrna Van Oort, Irene Van Oort; brothers-in-law, Ernie Kaiser, Will Thompson
