Henrietta J. Van Es, 81, formerly of Orange City, died recently in San Jose, Calif.
She and her husband, Rev. Peter Van Es had been RCA missionaries for 25 years to Indian tribes in
Oklahoma, New Mexico and Nebraska. They retired to San Jose in 1971.
"She was a women's libber of her time but never knew it," said Mrs. Van Es' daughter, Mary Lou Hondorp of San Jose. A pioneer of sorts, Mrs. Van Es later became one of the first two women to enroll in Western Theological Seminary. Advanced religious study was something not commonly undertaken by females in that period,
Hondorp noted.
The couple had also served churches in Washington, New Jersey and California's Sonoma
County.'
She was a past president of the Reformed Church Women of the Western Synod and co-founded the
Evergreens, a seniors' group in the Church of the Chimes, San Jose.
Survivors include daughters Mary Lou Hondorp and Mathann Pennings of Minnesota and a son, Dr. Roland Van Es, a professor and dean at Silliman University in the Phillipines.
