(December 1, 1930 - June 12, 2009)
Jacob Van Hattem, age 78 of Sibley, Iowa died Friday, June
12, 2009 at the Community Memorial Health Center in
Hartley, IA.
Funeral service in charge of Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley, will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 16, 2009 a the First Reformed Church in Sibley, with Reverend Gary Heukelom officiating. Burial will follow the lunch at the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley, IA.
Jacob "Jake" Van Hattem was bom on December 1, 1930 in Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Jacob
and Hendrijke (Eenkhoorn) Van Hattem. He grew up on various farms in the Rock Valley area.
He attended country school and graduated the eighth grade. He enlisted in the US Army on
October 15,1952 and was honorably discharged on October 1, 1954. On November 15,1986,
Jake was united in marriage to Barbara Menke in Seattle, Washington, after meeting in
Minneapolis, Minnesota. They lived in Seattle for a few years, and then moved to Doon, Iowa.
They later resided in Harris, Iowa and until now they have lived in Sibley. Jake's enjoyed his
work, driving a grain truck.
Jake is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Barbara Van Hattem of Sibley; three siblings,
Willemina Brooks of Nixa, MO, Alfred (wife, Delores) Van Hattem of Doon, IA and Wesselina
Van Berkum of Rock Valley, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nellie Vander Veen; half brothers and sisters,
Albert Van Riesen, Wessel Van Riesen and Christina Flier.
