Jacobus Gysbertsen, son of Joannes and Johanna Veggeler Gysbertsen was born in Wageningen, the Netherlands, on October 4, 1868, and immigrated to the United States by boat arriving in New York City, in 1894, at the age of 24 years. Jacobus traveled by train to Pella, Iowa. He then moved to the Orange City area, where he worked for the Gerrit De Jong family and the Bert Van Roekel family as a farm hand for several years. He later returned to the Netherlands, and convinced a young lady, his future wife, to come to the United States. Jacobus had four brothers and three sisters, all remaining in the Netherlands.

Gertrude (Peters) Gysbertsen was born in Renkum, the Netherlands, on February 8, 1870, and immigrated to the United States on July 4, 1901, at the age of 31 years, taking eleven days to make the trip. She was ill all eleven days of seasickness. She traveled by train from New York City to Pella, Iowa. On her trip to Pella, Gertrude’s purse was stolen, and not knowing the English language was unable to react. However, a man from Sioux Center, was riding on the train and saw the man take the purse, ran after him, caught him and retrieved Gertrude’s purse. After she arrived in Pella she was hired out to do housework for the farm families. Gertrude was from a family of six children. All of her brothers and sisters remained in the Netherlands.

Jacobus and Gertrude were married in a Catholic church in Knoxville, Iowa, on February 9, 1902, by a traveling priest who came through the community once a month to say Mass. During that same year Jacobus and Gertrude moved to Maurice, Iowa, where he worked for the railroad as a “section hand” for $1.00 a day. Later he worked as a “hired man” on the John Linnan farm and the Gerrit Vander Brake farm. They attended the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Maurice. The family attended the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Struble. Jacobus farmed with his sons, Jack and Henry, in Sioux and Plymouth counties. Jacobus bought eighty acres of land one and one half miles west of Struble, in 1926, just before the banks closed during the depression of the ‘30s. Henry left home in the early 1930’s to work at the North West Pig Company in Sioux City. Jacobus passed away on November 6, 1932, at the age of 64 years.
