Treinen, Peter 1874-1947 and Lucy Greff Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 215. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Peter Treinen was born December 25, 1874, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Treinen of Redwing, Minn. He married Lucy Greff of Remsen on May 18, 1904. Lucy was born October 13, 1879.

Peter and Lucy were the first couple to be married in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. They lived and farmed near Alton from 1904-1930, later moved to Plymouth County near Le Mars. They farmed there four years and then moved to Le Mars. Nine children were born to this couple.

Lillian married Michael Bortscheller and lives at Le Mars. Mike died Dec 28, 1975. Clarence married Florence Kontz and lived in Le Mars and died Oct 22, 1977. Raymond married Josephine Kurtzhals and he died October 31, 1975 and they lived in Le Mars.

Vivian married Joseph Bortscheller and lives at Le Mars. Ailene married Raymond Fiedler and lives at Le Mars. Peter Jr. married Sybil Schuler and Sybil is deceased. Peter lives in Le Mars. Kenneth married Wilma Marbach and lives in Le Mars. Kathleen married A. M. Junkers and lives in Le Mars. A. M. Junkers is deceased. Lois married Roy Bushee, she died January 21, 1982 and Roy died October 6, 1982.

Mr. Peter Treinen died August 4, 1947 and Lucy died June 28, 1932.

Peter C. Treinen born 25 Dec 1874 Red Wing Goodhue, Minnesota died 1934. He was the son of Nicolas Treinen 1839-1912 and Anna Katherine Jentgen 1841-1932. He married Lucy Greff on 18 May 1904 Remsen IA.

Lucy Greff born 13 Oct 1879 Marcus Cherokee Iowa died 28 Jun 1934 Le Mars IA . Born to John Greff 3 Dec 1854 Sheldon NY died 28 Jan 1939 IA , and Katherine Poole 1859 WI died 7 Oct 1925 Marcus, Cherokee IA. Peter and Lucy were the parents of the following children:

1. Lillian Catherine Treinen born 11 May 1905 IA died Feb 1986 Le Mars, Plymouth, IA. She married Michael Anthony Bortscheller born 1905 died 28 Dec 1975 Sioux City IA. Her obit was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Feb 6, 1986. They had no children.

2. Clarence John Treinen born 6 Jan 1907 Alton IA died 22 Oct 1977 Le Mars, Iowa. He married Florence Konz born 1907. They had two sons: Thomas Treinen of Cherokee, and Dr. Robert Treinen DVM of Ackley IA. His obituary was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Oct 24, 1977.

3. Raymond ‘Jim’ Nicholas Treinen born 19 Jun 1909 Alton IA died 31 Oct 1975 Le Mars, Iowa. He married Joseph Kurtzhals in 1945. No children listed in his obit which was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Oct 31, 1975.

4. Vivian A. Treinen born 27 Dec 1912 Alton IA died 6 May 2005. She married Joseph F. Bortscheller. No children listed in her obituary that was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of May 9, 2005.

5. Ailene Cecelia Treinen 26 Aug 1915 Alton IA died 11 Apr 2007 Le Mars IA. She married Raymond Peter Fiedler. They had two sons: Wayne Fiedler of Phoenix and Buck Fiedler of Le Mars. See her obituary in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of April 13, 2007.

6. Peter Lloyd Treinen born 4 Apr 1918 Sioux County died 17 Nov 2002 Le Mars, He married Sybil M. Schuler in 1942. They had a son Ronald Treinen. See his obit in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Nov 18, 2002.

7. Kenneth George Treinen born 8 Oct 1920 died 27 Jan 2004 Le Mars IA. He married Wilma Marbach. Children Kenneth Jr. and Susan of Minneapolis, Daniel and Jan of Scottsdale AZ, Kerry and Renee of Fond Du Lac WI, daughter and son in law Jean and George Montgomery of Fort Dodge and daughter in law Marilyn Treinen of Remsen. His obituary was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Jan 28, 2004.

8; Kathleen Treinen Junker born 8 Oct 1920 Alton IA died Jun 7, 1986 Le Mars. Married to A. M. Junker. Child – Pat Mrs. Cecil Denney of Le Mars, Her obituary was carried in the Le Mars Daily sentinel of June 9, 1986.

9. Lois Lucille Treinen Bushee born 31 Dec 1922 Alton IA died 21 Jan 1982 Torrence CA. She married Roy Bushee. She had a daughter Virginia Bushee of Torrance CA. Her obit was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Jan 25, 1982.

Peter Treinen died this a.m. Funeral Services Will be Held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
Funeral services will be held at the St. Catherine’s Catholic church at Oyens for Peter Treinen 72, who passed away this morning at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City. He had been sick the past two months. The services, which will be held Wednesday at 9:30, will be conducted by Rev. Karhoff. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Le Mars.
Peter Treinen was born December 25, 1874, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Treinen, at Redwing Minnesota. He came to Plymouth County in 1930 from Alton, where he had been residing. On May 18. 1904, he was united in marriage to Lucy Greff at Remsen.
Surviving are the children, Mrs. Mike Bortsheller of Le Mars; Clarence Treinen of Kingsley; Ray Treinen of Le Mars; Mrs. A. M. Junker of Le Mars; Kenneth Treinen of Le Mars; Pete Treinen of Le Mars; Mrs. B. R. Blackwell of Los Angeles California, and Mrs. Ray Feidler, with whom he had been making his home at Oyens. Mr. Treinen is also survived by Joe Treinen of Remsen; Charles Treinen of Alton; Ted Treinen of Marcus; Nick Treinen of Remsen, Felix Treinen of Marcus and a sister Mrs. Mary Steinfadt of Donley Minnesota. Seven grandchildren, also survive.
Mr. Treinen was preceded in death by his wife. Wiltgen’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Treinen Succumbs to Brief Illness
Life Long Resident of This Vicinity Stricken With Peritonitis.
Death claimed Mrs. Lucy Treinen wife of Peter Treinen, a life long resident of this vicinity, Thursday night at the Sacred Heart Hospital, following a five days illness, of peritonitis at the age of 54 years.
Mrs. Treinen was a member of a pioneer family residing in the east part of the county. Her maiden name was Lucy Greff, and she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Greff. Born at Marcus October 13, 1879. She received her early education in that locality. She was united in marriage May 18, 1904 at Remsen with Peter Treinen. Following their marriage they moved to Alton where they lived for twenty six years. They came to Le Mars four years ago and of late lived on a small acreage west of the city limits.
She leaves to mourn her death her husband, Peter Treinen, and a large family of sons and daughters who are: Raymond, Vivian, Peter, Kathleen, Kenneth and Lois living at home, Mrs. Michael Bortscheller of Le Mars, Clarence Treinen of Alton, Mrs. Raymond Fiedler of Oyens, her father, John Greff of Omaha, three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Frank Swart and George Greff of Marcus, Mrs. Ray Pitsor and John Greff of Faith SD, Miss Lucille Greff of Rapid City SD, and one grandson Wayne Francis Fiedler.
Mrs. Treinen was a devout member of the Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic daughters of America. She was a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, and esteemed by all who knew her.
The funeral was held Monday morning at St. Joseph church, Mgr. J. D. Fisch officiating and interment made in St. Joseph cemetery. The pall bearers were Henry Kurtzhuis, Bert Hoss, A. C. Reuter, Jos Meis, Silas Means and Leo Meis.
