Irene W. Campbell

Irene Wilhelmina Campbell was born on May 26, 1912 on the family farm near Irwin, Iowa, to John and Emma (Thompson) Frank. She attended school in Irwin and was united in marriage on January 20, 1932 to Ralph Campbell at her parent’s home. The couple lived on a farm west of Irwin until her parents moved to town in 1940. They then moved to the farm where she was born. This is where they raised their children: Norman, Vernon, Lois, and Lyle.

Irene was a housewife and loving mother. She raised her family while helping her husband with the farm. She loved to be in her flower garden and also did beautiful hand work. She was a member of the Irwin Chapter No. 182 Order of Eastern Star, the Greeley Home Makers, and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Irwin and the United Methodist Women.

Irene remained on the farm after Ralph’s death in 1998; becoming a resident of Manilla Manor in 2001. It was there that she died on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, having attained the age of ninety-six years and three months. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph, and her infant son Donald.

She is survived by her children: Norman Campbell and his wife Donna of Irwin, Iowa, Vernon Campbell and his wife Nora of Irwin, Lois and her husband Darrell Johnson of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Lyle Campbell and his wife Gloria of Irwin; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and twelve great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Friday, August 29, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa, with Pastor Keith Pals and Pastor Ted Sieck officiating the 10:30 AM service. Honorary casket bearers were Terry Campbell, Brian Johnson, Brad Campbell, and Ron Johnson. Serving as casket bearers were Brad Nobiling, Richard Wiig, Robert McLaughlin, Jim Buman, Robert Wiig, Troy Kaney, Jeff Keech, and Bill Larson with interment held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin.
