Edna Grace Campbell - Age 97

Edna Grace Campbell was born on April 22, 1914 to George and Mamie (Frank) Gawley on a farm east of Irwin. She grew up on the family farm in Jefferson Township. Attending elementary school in Jefferson Township No. 8. She then went to Irwin for two years, then to Harlan graduating from Normal Training in 1931. She taught five years in Greely and Jefferson Twp., walking eight hours to and from school. On January 11, 1939 she was united in marriage to Howard Campbell in Denison, Iowa. Two children were born to this union Marvin and Larry.

They began their life on the farm she lived on for 71 years. Edna enjoyed helping on the farm, gardening, cooking, planting flowers, sewing, playing cards with her grandchildren, and card clubs. She belonged to Canasta Club for over sixty years.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Irwin and a member of the W.S.C.S, holding many offices. In 1982 she received the special recognition pin. Edna loved to travel and just get in the car and go for a drive.

After having heart surgery and a stroke she was in the Denison Care Center for a short time, later on she decided to move to Irwin. In 2010 she moved to the Reed House in Denison.

Edna died on July 25, 2011 at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa, having attainted the age of ninety-seven years, three months, and three days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers: George and John Gawley, and one sister: Lucy Borkowski.

She is survived by her two sons Marvin (Mary kay) Campbell of Denison, Iowa and Larry (Rita) Campbell of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; sister Alice (Marcus) Kuhl of Denison, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Pastor Leila Blackburn officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Marsha Bose, Tyson Campbell, Kim Brucks, Maimee Gomez, Mark Campbell, and Kent Campbell. Interment was held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa.
