Darlene D. Callender - Age 86

Darlene Delores Callender was born on December 7, 1925 to Vince and Louise Sunderland in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. After moving to Harlan, she joined the United Methodist Church.

Darlene attended rural schools and graduated from Harlan High School in 1943. She received a normal training certificate and taught in rural schools.

On December 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to Gene Callender. They had one son, Donald. Darlene liked to help her husband on the farm near Irwin and Manning and later when they bought a farm near Manilla.

Darlene enjoyed participating in her club and being on a bowling team. In February of 1990, Darlene and Gene retired and moved into their home in Harlan. She continued to reside there after Gene’s death in 1997.

In 2006, Darlene became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan where she died on Saturday, June 23, 2012 having attained the age of eighty-six years, six months, and sixteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Darrell.

Darlene is survived by her son Donald Callender and his wife Mona of Waukee, Iowa; grandsons Alan Callender of Iowa City, Iowa and Adam Callender of Waukee, Iowa; other family members and friends.

Rev. Darwin Moore officiated the 2:00 PM funeral service on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Adam Callender, Alan Callender, Kenny Holloway, Mike Lorenzen, Jim Hansen, and Gary Sebern. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
