Darrell "Barky" Bauerkemper - Age 83

Darrell Dean Bauerkemper, son of George and Matilda (Wohlert) Bauerkemper, was born on July 5, 1928 on a farm near Neola, Iowa. He attended Layton Township Country School and graduated from Walnut High School at the age of sixteen. While growing up, Darrell helped his father on the family farm.

Darrell joined the service in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 21, 1951 and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict until December 23, 1952. He was then transferred to the Army Reserve to complete his five year obligation and was honorably discharged from the Army on April 15, 1957.

While attending a local dance, Darrell met Dorothy Murray. They were united in marriage on July 23, 1955 in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Sandy, Jani, Donnie and Billy.

After their marriage, Darrell farmed south of Walnut and formed lifelong friendships with those living close by. In 1976, Darrell and Dorothy moved to town and continued farming until his retirement in the fall of 1989. Darrell loved socializing and playing cards with family and friends as well as attending dances with Dorothy.

Darrell died Sunday, March 25, 2012 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, having attained the age of eighty-three years, eight months and twenty days. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Billy Bauerkemper.

"Barky" is survived by Dorothy, his wife of nearly 57 years; his children: Sandy and her husband Terry Donohoe of Norwalk, Iowa; Jani and her husband "Cub" Sheehan of Bondurant, Iowa; Donnie Bauerkemper and his wife Gaylean of Walnut, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one great grandson and another on the way; four step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; sisters Darlene "Dotty" Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska and Beverly and her husband Patrick Waters of Rock Rapids, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Rev. Stephen Lewis officiated the 10:30 am funeral service at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Casket bearers were his grandchildren: Troy Donohoe, Scott Sheehan, Brian Bauerkemper, Angie Dale, Craig Sheehan, Todd Bauerkemper, Michael Donohoe and Kyle Bauerkemper. Military Rites were held by the American Legion Post No. 422 in Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.
