Thomas L. Assmann - Age 64

Thomas Leo Assmann, son of Alphonse and Elsie Marie (Finken) Assmann, was born on May 19, 1945, in Jefferson, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jefferson, Iowa and attended Jefferson Elementary and Jefferson High School graduating with the class of 1963. After high school, Thomas worked in the service department at Finch’s Chevrolet in Jefferson.

On March 7, 1969, Thomas enlisted into the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam War stationed in Germany where he received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal before being honorably discharged on December 8, 1970. After serving his country, Thomas returned home to Jefferson, Iowa where he assisted his father in their family run hatchery and feed store. Thomas then moved to Des Moines, Iowa where he worked for Mercy Hospital for several years as well as various other jobs until his need for back surgery.

Due to complications, Thomas was paralyzed after his surgery and he moved to Knoxville, Iowa where he started rehabilitation at the Iowa Veterans Home in 2003. After two years, Thomas moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa and this has been his home since.

Thomas died at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center on November 20, 2009, having attained the age of sixty-four years, six months and one day. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Larry and his niece Kimberly Belluomini.

Thomas is survived by his brother Ronald Assmann and his wife DJ of Las Vegas, Nevada and his sister Rita Standish of Corpus Christi, Texas; his nephew, Todd M. Assmann of Kahului, Hawaii; his great nephews: Benjamin Assmann, Steven Bruner and Brandon Belluomini; other family and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, with Msgr. Gerald Stessman celebrating the 11:00 AM service. Military Rites were held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa, by Earling American Legion Post No. 615 of Earling, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were: Ronald Assmann, Job Abraria, Duane Finken, Keith Finken, Ronald Stessman, and Leo Stessman.
